PC3 for 954&929

I have read threads that say you can use a 929 PC3 on a 954 as long as you use a program for a 954. but i was browsing the web recently and found a PC3 serial port for 168.00.

This seems like a real good deal compared to a PC3 usb for 300.00

What i was wondering is if there is any difference between serial port and usb units besides how they connect to your computer. Is there any advantage to having the usb or is power commander just trying to sell out their supply of serial port units.

one more question they have a choice between 2 different serial port units a PC3r with ignition control and a regular PC3 without but there both the same price. Which one is better?

If these are good prices and the right thing please dont buy them all before i get a chance to get mine pretty please

Re: PC3 for 954&929

The R lets you map ignition as well although that's not usually a big deal unless you've got a faiily modded engine. If they're the same price you might as well get the R I guess.
USB is really handy if you're swapping maps regularly but PC's are usually set and forget so I wouldn't be too concerned about running a serial one.
I'm not sure if the serial and USB both have 250rpm mapping or if the serial only does every 500rpm so you might want to check that first.

Re: PC3 for 954&929

the usb is the most recent model.
As far as mapping goes, they all work prety much equal. The usb will let you connect other gadgets on it,like dynojet lcd, shifters etc.

Re: PC3 for 954&929

Another point to bear in mind is, that most modern laptops dont have a serial port (my 2 year old one doesn't) and as I am finding out the pcmcia card adaptors don't work very well. So loading maps is a pain.

Re: PC3 for 954&929

You don't have to use a laptop either.
I have a five-meter cable I can throw out the window so I can use my desktop at home and the laptop at the track.

You can also get Serial to USB connectors - Shop around, you may be able to pick up a second hand one cheaper...

Sorry to hijack the tread but I was reluctant to buy another cable as dynojet had told me they have a lot of problems with the pcmcia convertors and the usb/serial cables. You've definetly had one hooked up and loaded maps with it? Also I know its going to sound stupid but did you use the USB software?

My next question is how do you get the serial software to pick up the usb? it only has com 1-8 in the port selection and auto and none? and I have tried them all.
or how do you make the usb behave like a com port?

thanks in advance for any help

Re: PC3 for 954&929

when you use an adaptor, the software creates a virtual com port that is assigned to the usb-serial.So you just use that in the settings.Maybe you dont have the correct drivers.

Re: PC3 for 954&929

hi when I plug it in I get hardware found, UPS 2004 and human interface device. I'm runing xp home.
The PCMCIA serial convertor I bought partially works.

heres what I wrote to dynojet
Dear Sir/Madam,
I have just bought a second hand PCIII model 104 for my 929 fierblade.
Everythig has fitted ok and the bike starts fine and the PC is lighting up.
I have downloaded the softwate for it v2.7.8.22 running on my laptop (windows Xp home)
Connecting through a PCMCIA com port.

It seems to connect to the PC but displays no map data in the chart.
When I try get all I get the message "File and Power Commander versions incompatible"

If I start the bike it does show rpm and throttle position in the software window

When I select Hardware info I get the following:
Production Date: N/A
Version: 104
Fuel Revision: 2
Ignition Revision: 0
Compatible map: 104

If I load a file while the PC is connected it will allow me to compare the two maps.
But the map in the PC looks very different.
But if I try and upload the new map 104-509.map I get a verification error and connection to the PC failed.
What should I try next?

their response
I would recommend using a desktop PC with a fixed serial port, we have had many problems with communication using serial to USB converters and PCMCIA cards.
Let me know how you get on.

I'll guess the next thing is to try and borrow a laptop with a serial port.

Re: PC3 for 954&929

If your PC has a serial port you could also make up a long cable you can pass out the window.
