2008 Oil/Filter Change - what oil?

Bike is in for its first service (along with the repaires from dropping it..)

Going to change oil and filter at 500km and again in 2 weeks, as on the 22nd I'm off for a long ride 700+km....

Anyway, the garage phone me to tell me the service manual states 10-30w however due to the current climate they only have(and use) 10-40w. And it could be a while until they get some in. Not to worry I thought. Off to the UK today, so I'll grab 4ltrs and bring it back with me... now...

Looked at Mobil, Castrol and Shell Oils and too be honest (to me) it seems only Shell do a range from Mineral > Semi > Fully Sync oils? But none in 10-30w?

I have no idea what oil the blade comes with - the garage says it comes pre-oiled from the factory - any idea if its mineral or semi off the production line?

Any of you UK based 08' bladers - what do you use?

Regards

Richard

Re: 2008 Oil/Filter Change - what oil?

Mate, have a read of some old posts, as the subject of oil type and consumption is the main cause for concern with 08 Blade owners.

Now..........

My Blade has not used any oil at all. Maybe I am lucky, maybe I haven't done enough miles on her (1500). The "official" stance is that the bike should run Castrol Power1 Racing 10W30 Fully Synthetic. My dealer only ever uses semi-synthetic oil though, so that is what mine is running in 10W30 grade.

Like I say, no oil issues, but I don't know if that is down to mileage, luck or oil type. I trust my dealer and all seems well at the moment.

What do you mean by "official" exactly - is that what's listed in the manual?
I'd have expected Honda to specify a Honda-branded oil?
I'm impressed that your mechanic would actually ring you about this rather than simply put 10W-40W in. Might be worth hanging onto him :-)

definately makes me like the mech already.. oil is a choice.. i would imagine it comes with honda gnp4 or whatever it's called.. that's what my manual recommends for an 06, but you'll be fine with whatever you choose.. just change it when it needs it..

Re: 2008 Oil/Filter Change - what oil?

Howdy Guys..

Back from the UK, where I managed to pick up 4ltrs of Castrol GPS 10-30w.

Phew!

One thing I found quite amusing while I was in the UK was the state of 'Petrol Stations'..I went in at least 3 (A Esso and 2 BPs) and none had a good selection of motoring spares/oils etc - the Esso was infact a 'Tesco Express' and sold *NOTHING* in terms of motoring products - now...if I wanted a bag of cat litter I would be okay! and the BP's were 'Marks and Spensers' - but did have dash cleaner, antifreeze and WD40...but no bike oil.

In the end I had to find a Halfords...and then I had the only bottle of GPS.

Regards

Richard

Re: 2008 Oil/Filter Change - what oil?

The oil is choice as Idavis said. But I choose Motul for my bikes, and only the syntetic one. So now with '08 CBR1000RR, I go with Motul 300V 4T Factory Line 10W40.

I burn one's fingers with Castrol and now don't use an oil from this manufacturer. I use Mobil on cars and Motul in bikes.
