954 front end swap possibilities?

Having downed my 2003 954rr I need to replace (so far) the left fork the triple tree and more than likely the front rim (to get it mobile again) I was wondering if anyone knew if I could use 929 or 1000 parts to fix this and if so what years would be compatible

Re: 954 front end swap possibilities?

929 and 954 forks and clamps should be a straight swap.
1000 forks should fit but you'd need the front guard and calipers.
1000 front wheel is a straight swap. The discs are smaller but the 929/954 discs fit the wheel.
I have 1000RR forks here I can measure up to confirm tomorrow if you want.

Okay.
I'm crook with flu so I can't be bothered going out in the dark to do it now.
I'll leave myself a note to do it tomorrow but if I forget bug me about it - [email protected]

Re: 954 front end swap possibilities?

The 1000RR forks I have here are '06.
I'm comparing them to my 929 forks which are still on the bike and they're essentially the same.
1000RR length is 695mm from axle centre to top of the tube (not the cap).
929 length is 695-700mm - bit hard to see accurately while they're installed.
Upper clamp area is 50mm Dia. on both.
Lower clamp area is 54mm dia. on both.
Top of lower clamp is 195mm from top of tube on both.
Axles are identical.
Both are 43mm inverts so it _might_ even be possible to mix and match lower and upper tubes and internals.

Re: 954 front end swap possibilities?

Surprisingly, it even looks like you could run the 929/954 guard on the 1000RR forks with very little trouble.
You would need the radial calipers though (and bolts) or you'd have to make brackets to fit the conventionals to the radial forks. Brake lines look like they'd be okay.

Re: 954 front end swap possibilities?

I wouldn't think so.
The damping may possibly be a little more refined.
The radial calipers are heavier than the conventionals and I haven't seen any marked improvement from them.
The caliper mounts are set up for 310mm ('04/'05) or 320mm discs ('06/'07) so would probably need 5-10mm spacers to run with 929/954 discs.
Personally, I would spend the money on 929/954 fork kits and springs rather than buy the 1000RR forks expecting any improvement.

Re: 954 front end swap possibilities?

You don't have to use the 1000RR clamps so you don't have to change the bearings at all.
Are the bearings different between the 929/954 and 1000RR?
