Different Brake Calipers

I just traded in my 929 for a 2007 1000 Repsol. The front brake calipers are Tokico and the rear ones are Nissin. Now I have looked at other 2007's and they are both Tokico but there are not any other Repsol's I have found so I was wondering if this is normal? I did look at some pics of bikes on a Repsol Forum and it appears they are different but I rather just ask.

Re: Different Brake Calipers

That's correct.
There's no reason for them to be made by the same manufacturer.

Re: Different Brake Calipers

I agree, why does it matter who makes the calipers?
I suppose you want the same brand of suspension at both ends as well :-)

Re: Different Brake Calipers

I can see wanting the left and right the same, but when the systems are independent, it doesn't matter.

Re: Different Brake Calipers

you'd think if honda made a deal with nissin for the front calipers...nissin would want to do the rears as well.

i think it seems kinda strange also. but honda, being very smart, was probably saving money by using two companies.

Re: Different Brake Calipers

Actually, those front calipers were only used on the Repsol that year.

Re: Different Brake Calipers

Would it happen to be a Showa shock and KYB forks?
I think the companies are related, Nissin-Showa, Tokico-KYB so maybe the front end was built by KYB and the rear end by Showa?

Re: Different Brake Calipers

Showa on both ends. Honda doesn't deviate much from that. Brakes they use mainly use Nissin but have started to use Tokico a little more.

It could have been done for racing purposes; they wanted to use different calipers so they put it on just one model.

Re: Different Brake Calipers

I don't care that they are different. I just wanted to be sure that the bike wasn't trashed and the guy before me changed them after a crash cause he found them for cheaper.

Re: Different Brake Calipers

According to Honda, the Repsol that year (07) had calipers with a part number that was never used on the previous 1000RR models.

No, the '08 uses Monoblock calipers. This is the first production Honda that has them as stock.

It is possible that Honda decided to give them a chance and decided to use a new vendor to see how the vendor was. Having two vendors is always a good idea.
