1996/1997 or 1998/1999 as they are different.

Re: 918 gearbox ratios

I searched the web, and couldn't find anything. Luckily I have the original Motorcyclist test on the 1992 cbr900 (it has the 893 motor). Here is what is says:
Primary transmission: 1.520:1
Internal Ratios:
1st: 2.769
2nd: 2.000
3rd: 1.578
4th: 1.400
5th: 1.250
6th: 1.174
I don't know the difference between the primary ratio and the rest. I've noticed that the primary ratio didn't change up to at least 1995, but beyond that I am not sure. I have no idea about the internal ratios, if they changed or not.
Hope this helps.

Re: 918 gearbox ratios

I think I figured out the primary ratio vs the internal ratios. The primary ratio is how many times the crankshaft turns vs. the main shaft. The internal ratios are how many times the main shaft turns vs. the countershaft, which is what the sprocket is attached to. I think the internal ratios have already calculated the primary ratio, so that in first gear for example, the engine turns 2.769 times to turn the countershaft (small sprocket) once. If any body can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.

Re: 918 gearbox ratios

Primary ratio is the drive from the crank to the input shaft.
Gear ratios are between input and output shafts.
Gear ratios don't include the primary ratio.
Final ratio is the drive sprockets.
Total ratio is the primary, the specific gear and final ratios all combined.

Re: 918 gearbox ratios

Allright, thanks very much Skater & Bladeracer. This is the information I needed in order to choose a suitable ring and pinion gear ratio for our car, thanks again.

Skater... any chance of scanning/emailing me that page from the honda book?

Re: 918 gearbox ratios

Thanks for clearing that up Bladeracer.
locoblade007, I will try to scan and email you the page tomorrow, just give me your email address.
Is this for engineering by any chance? We have a similar event up here for engineering departments called Formula SAE, where teams build a go cart with a max 600cc engine. Universities from all over Canada compete.

Re: 918 gearbox ratios

My email is [email protected] thanks. I am studying motorsport engineering, but this build is not part of Formula SAE aka Formula Student. Swansea Metropolitan University does run a competitive car in that series, placed 6th overall this summer at Silverstone. Our hopes is to run this car in the RGB class C of the 750 Motor Club race series next year... wish us luck
