954 front spring swap???

Hey all, I would like to swap the springs in the front on my 954 from stock .71 to 1.03(racetech). The honda dealer here says I need to change to a gold valving kit as well, as the standard valving won't work correctly with that big of change to the spring rate. Is this actually the case or is he just feeding me a line? Thanks for any input.

He's trying to sell you a valve kit.
The spring has _nothing_ to do with the damping.
The spring supports the bike.
The valving adjusts the speed at which the fork functions.

Re: 954 front spring swap???

I think there is an element of truth in the need for changing valving. A harder spring will produce greater forces requiring more damping to absorb.
In other words, for an impact of a given energy, a 30% stiffer spring will travel 30% less, thus the same energy will have to be absorbed over a 30% less distance, thus requiring more damping.

Re: 954 front spring swap???

I was assuming he was going to the heavier spring because he's a really big bloke.
If he's a lightweight guy then it is quite likely he would lose fork travel and this would leave less time for the damping effect. I can't see how re-valving it would have much effect though.

Thanks for the input. I weigh 310 and need help in stopping the massive nose diving under breaking. Not looking for any performance gains in handling except under breaking. Just like to cruise with the option for speed from time to time.
