i gutted my air box and...

there 's been alot of discussion about the flapper in the air box, and i heard it wasn't a good idea to remove it unless you eliminate the exhaust valve also. Well, i've purchased a serpent system for my 954 (it's on the way),and decided to gut the air box. after it was gutted, with the stock system still on the bike, it started and ran fine at idle until it went to low idle then it kept stalling out. so i adjusted the idle and it seems to run fine. did anyone else experience this, or is something wrong?

i removed the flapper and all associated parts

Okay, I was worried there was no filter.

Hmm, I haven't personally done this mod, but I don't recall anyone mentioning the problem of stalling at warm idle before, that actually did the mod. Best I can suggest is to make sure the warm idle is 1200rpm + or- 100rpm (as near as I can recall). The adjuster is on the left, accessible through a lower fairing vent.

If that doesn't do it, I would make sure my starter valves were in sync.

This is the simple solution. My many knowledgeable friends here will probably have more to suggest.

what are starter valves and how do you check to see if they are in sync.

A very loose interpretation:

Starter valves are to fuel injection...as jets are to carburation (sp, sumpin don't look right with the spellin)

If you don't have the factory service manual but want to do your own work, get it. It's well worth it. You'll need a vacuum manometer (such as CarbStiks, but others are available) if you want to check and adjust it yourself. If you don't, you'll at least be able to tell your trusted mechanic you might need a starter valve sync. If your trusted mechanic doesn't know what that is, find another one, FAST!

ok, i think i get it, and i do have a copy of the factory service manual, and gonna check it out when i get home. are there any other symptoms the bike may have if the starter valves need to be syncronized?

A rough idle or an idle that varies in speed. If you have the service manual you can do it yourself very easily. That is if you have a multiple vacuum gauge.

thanks for the help, i found another post on this site that gives step by step directions on how to do adjust the starter valves, it does have a rough idle compaired to my friends 954. i also have a pciii on it, would a different map have an affect on the starter valve adjustment? it sounds like it is a mechanical adjustment and the map probally dosen't matter when it comes to the adjusting.

now i'm in search of a manometer and the adjusting tool
