Differences between 929 and 954??

I currently own a 929 and have been considering swapping it for a 954 but have a few reservations. Could anyone shed any light on the differences between the two models in relation to handling (and is it a slapper), power and delivery, comfort for rider and pillion, touring, everyday commuting and fuel consumption. Cheers.

Re: Differences between 929 and 954??

I updated to a from a 2001 929 to a 2003 954 at the start of the year.

At first there did not seem much difference in the two bikes.
The riding position was slightly lower at the front, but not enough to cause any concerns.
I feel the comfort (or lack of it) is similar on both bikes.
The brakes feel a little stronger, but not heaps
The bike seemed to steer a little quicker, but i did not have a damper on the 954 at first, so that may have affected the outcome
At first the power did not feel that much different, but after about 4000 klms the 954 had loosened up and it definitly has more mid range.
The 954 looks more modern than the 929 does, but that's just my opinion.
The price difference probably wouldn't justify the update, unless you just want to get a newer bike, but if that is the case it will be superceded in a few months anyway. If you can get a 954 for the right price, just go out and get it

Do unto others, before some prick does it to you!

You can even find leftover brand new 929's laying around - all you gotta do is pick up the phone and find out where.

I saw a brand new 929 here in march, not sure if it's still there, but I'd be wanting to move it pretty bad were I the shop owner..

Re: Differences between 929 and 954??

I like the way the 954 looks but it is not much better than the 929. I would wait for another year and spring for a 1000.

Re: Differences between 929 and 954??

When I bought my 954 I looked very closely at getting a leftover 929. I went with the 954 because it came in the faster silver/black color scheme.

Seriously, changes to the swingarm (pivot point, overall design), frame and lots of other little things hinted to a better bike. If I already had a 929, I probably would have kept it.

Re: Differences between 929 and 954??

I'm guessing that if I were in your shoes I'd wait for the 1000. The difference in the 929 and 954 is really not all that much from what I've read - at least on the street. If anything, the 929 might be slightly more comfy, while giving up a slight power advantage. They both slap if you're ham-fisted. Pilon comfort sucks big time on both, unless your pilon is 60 pounds. I think the 929 is pretty darned comfortable for touring, but I'm in the minority on that one.

I had a 929 prior to my current 954. Only reason I have a 954 is because I totaled my 929 and when shopping around for a new bike, I found the 954 more comfortable...the reach to the handlebars wasn't as long whereas I had Heli bars on the 929 to lessen neck strain.

The handling is quite similar; braking on the 954 is the most obvious improved difference. Power and delivery are similar, the 954 being a bit stronger. I wouldn't even consider a pillion as this bike is not made for 2 up riding or touring. If you're looking for a touring/commuting bike and increased gas mileage, look at another bike. Fuel consumption is similar to the 929. My VFR gets better mileage and is better for 2 up riding/commuting/touring.

Really, unless you want/need a new bike, keep your 929 for now and see what the new 1000 brings to the table. My $.02 USD

Re: Differences between 929 and 954??

I borrow my buddies 929rr w/ full system, cams, power comander w/ custom map..... all the time lately because I've recently relocated and my 954rr w/ slip on, power comander has been stuck on a big boat back and forth across the Atlantic for the last 5 months.

Also have had the pleasure of riding friends new 954 w/ full Hindle and power comander, 600rr and 02 F4i. To make a long story short.... :give****:

The 954 feels like a 600 on steroids although not nearly as comfortable. The fit and finish of the 954 is well worth the price because it is way sexy er. . All the money put into the 600rr-F4i, 929 still hasnt caught up to either of the basically stock 954's. Point, twist and go with very little effort, gobs of power at any RPM and at the end of the day after 25000 miles nothing but oil changes and lots of tires. Did I mention terrific gas mileage yet. Anyway if I had the choice all over again, the 954 would be my choice w/o question.

P.S. I HAVE THE BEST FRIENDS.

Re: Differences between 929 and 954??

My 929 ROCKS. I rode a 954 and the seat was harder.....alot harder. I know thats a minimal gripe, but not after riding 6 hours straight!!!!!
