Fireblade starting issues

Hey, forgive me for my newbie'ness, I'm having general starting issues when my bike is cold. The mechanic checked the electrics and said they were fine, but when its 10deg or below I have huge issues starting. I usually leave the choke on for 1-2 min before I start, and it will turn over but not catch. Sometimes it'll fire up, then as soon as i open the throttle it reves then dies. again, its my first bike so forgive me if i'm missing something simple. Would it be the choke circuts? The battery is 6 months old and a decent brand.

What bike are we talking about?
What do you mean about leaving the choke on before you start - before you start what?
Has anything been done to the bike before this became a problem?

lmao, sorry for the lack of details. Its a fireblade, 250cc '88 model. I've had it for a bit under a year now, and its always been the same however it hasn't really gotten cold enough to become an issue until now. Usually I can still start it.

I'll turn the key so that the bike is on, open up the choke but not press the start button for 30/min. It has been dropped once, about 10 minutes after I first bought it (funny story there, sisters and bikes don't mix).

It's not a Fireblade then - although it's nickname is Babyblade :-)
I doubt it's relevant but is there a reason why you start the bike this way?
Does it run fine once it warms up?
Is maintenance up to date?
Clean air and fuel filters?
How old are the spark plugs?
What is its mileage?

Re: Fireblade starting issues

I'll throw in an update, so that if you got the same problem, at least you got somewhere to start.......

We discovered it was the fuel pump. Turns out it was a mistibuishi car fuel pump.... that probably did fine for a good while, but started to be not so good now....... so got a new one in last night, this morning, fired off first time. She sounded so nice, so jumped on for a burl...... got two blocks and it died. But we think that it was our shonky wiring that caused. Really I'm not sure, its still in a back ally somewhere. Find out tomorrow. But that's for next episode folks........

btw, if you're in Australia, really good site.
Car Parts, Motorcycle Parts, Truck Parts - Australia's #1 parts locator & parts classifieds | Find, buy & sell new & used parts online

my mechanic told me about it, its good for any vehicle. What happens is it emails all logical wheckers dealers etc. and they email or ring you back if they have what you're looking for. Saved me $70.
