Need help addressing some 954rr issues...

Hey guys I'm new to this forum! I been doing some searches trying to figure out a solution to my problem. Anyways on a 2003 954RR 8,500 miles. Micron slip on, K&N. I just had it serviced, and they said the valves were within spec. Always used Honda HP4S oil in her.

- Slight knocking/chattering noise at idle or low rpm's

- Cold start in the morning, fires up and then will stall. Start it again, it will races to 2,000 rpm and warms up fine.

- Been noticing it's not as smooth off idle anymore as it used too, power comes on strong around 3000.

- Idles between 1,000-1,500 when warm.

- Strong exhaust smell, tip of the pipe is sooty.

My conclusions:

- Faulty FPR

- Faulty Cold Start Solenoid

Anyone have similar problems? I'm going to take the tank off soon, and I have a new set of plugs. Trying to get all my ducks in line before I do that. Thanks in advance!

I would tend to agree the FPR is the obvious culprit.
The fast idle isn't a solenoid. It's a simple wax element immersed in the coolant that expands with temperature.
I'd recommend binning the K&N and run an OEM filter.
How low are the revs with the chattering/knocking you mentioned?

So a OEM filter is better than K&N? I'll add that to my list.

The knocking/chattering is from about idle to 3k or so. It light, and I've had an XR650R that sounded similar, it was the chain tensioner. You can hear it clearly with your head over the forks looking down, it may be an exhaust leak too. I'll have to take a peek. Thanks for the quick reply!

Re: Need help addressing some 954rr issues...

just changed my fpr for the same reasons on my 929 but bladeracer is right you should bin the k&n and go back to stock. as for noise my 929 knocks and rattles until 3-4k rpm and then rips after that, i've checked just about everything looking for the noise but to no avail, there are several posts regaurding knocking noises which lead me to beleive that 929/954s are just noisey....

50psi at idle.
It's not the pressure that's the problem though.
It's operated by vacuum from the engine.
If the vacuum diaphram tears then fuel is sucked straight into the engine.
