01 929 why can't I start it in any gear?

Kickstand up, clutch in, but it will not start.

Place into nutrual and it starts. Whats the deal I never had a bike that does that.

I really don't know if it's normal as I disconnected the kickstand switch before I ever rode the bike.
But I think it should start with stand up and clutch in.
Since it starts in neutral maybe check the kickstand switch.
Does the engine die if you drop the kickstand when it's in gear?

I don't think the clutch switch knows whether the bike is neutral though?

If it's in neutral then you will have let the clutch out which will engage the switch, or not.

Re: 01 929 why can't I start it in any gear?

Yup, that's normal, or at least mine works the same way. Damn safety crap. It won't start in gear even with the clutch in. Gotta be in neutral. The good news, however, is if you are in first and stall, if you pull in the clutch, it will start in first gear in that situation. I have no idea why, but I'm glad it does. I had a new Ducati, and if you stalled pulling out, you had to stop and put it in neutral.

Edit: Never mind, I had the kickstand down. Duh. Ok, mine will start in gear with the clutch in and kickstand up. Whoever said it's your kickstand switch, I'd agree with that.

Yeah the engine dies if I drop it into gear with the kickstand down.

And no if I stall it out in 1st gear it will not start if I just pull in the clutch, I have to place it back in neutral.

There are two wires that go to the left hand grip that are not hooked up. Is this some type clutch switch thing.

Bingo we have a winner winner chicken dinner

Yes that is what sends a signal back saying you have disengaged the clutch and it's safe to start in gear.

Re: 01 929 why can't I start it in any gear?

I just went out and disconnected the wires from the clutch and it would not start in gear so that looks like your problem for sure.

Re: 01 929 why can't I start it in any gear?

Sweet thanks bro. I was wondering what those wires where for. They where just hanging out when I bought it and it ran fine, so I thought to myself dont f with it. Looks like I'll fix it tonight.

REP to you.

The clutch may not know it's in neutral but it is required to complete the circuit. If the clutch switch isn't working, it thinks the clutch is out and will not crank.

Both the sidestand and clutch switches can be checked by joining the two wires at the switch, one switch at a time, to bypass it. When it cranks, you found the bad switch.

Yes the prob is you clutch switch is bad repace that switch and it will sart in any gear, or but not recomended just join the two wires on the harness side not the switch side and it will start in any gear even with out the clutch pulled in
