Front Brake Problems

01 929 I have had the front rim and tire off many times and have never got the front rim to spin freely..How much tension should be on the rim. Should it spin freely or have some brake friction? I have tried flipping the spacers and bleeding the brakes but it just seems like the brakes never completely release from the rotor. Is this a master cylinder problem? When I bought the bike it only had one rotor, and caliper I bought a set of brake calipers and another rotor and tried those out and it still had resistance....is this normal How many rotations should I get out of the rim and tire spinning freely?

Re: Front Brake Problems

i only get 1-2 rotations at most. now if the calipers aren't on it, it will spin, and spin, and spin...

Re: Front Brake Problems

Thanks for the responses so far has anyone else had any problems like these.. Is the friction going to cause any kind of brake failure?

Re: Front Brake Problems

The friction is completely normal unless of course you can barely turn the wheel by hand in which case I'd be concerned with the wheel bearings. Like bulldog said you'll get about 1-2 rotations and the wheel will stop due to brake pad friction but with the brake calipers off the wheel will spin quite freely.

Re: Front Brake Problems

If it was the wheel bearings would the wheel have resistance even with the brakes off? I have recently had the wheel bearings done but do not have a torque wrench so when I put the wheel back on I had to eye it as far as tightening the axle bolt....but I would think that if it was the bearings then the wheel would have resistance all the time not just with the brake caliper on

Re: Front Brake Problems

If your brakes are not reseting you should take apart the calipers, clean out the pistons and seals (or replace seals) and rebuild. Whats your mileadge?? They can build up in time. Your master cylinder would likely give you a seizure or spongy feeling brake symptoms.

Bearings would make the wheel spin poorly without calipers on and you likely could feel that it's not turning smoothly (like a mild grinding in wheel).. on top of that you would have play in your front wheel even if it appears minor..

Mine rub all the time as well... You should consider mileadge and history for preventative maintenance

Re: Front Brake Problems

The brakes will prevent you wheel from spinning much this is normal, as the pads will always be lightly resting on the rotor. as long as your bearing is tight and isnt grinding you should have no problem. rotor noise often depends on you pads too but thats just part of it.

Re: Front Brake Problems

I'm having the same exact problem, sounds like I need to tear the calipers apart and do a rebuild, man I hate messing with bleeding brakes!
