Upgrade to 954 from 98 900RR for track and road?

Hey peeps

I've been offered an opportunity to buy a 954 (from a friend who has gotten a scare and wants out of biking) thats just had the entire gearbox redone and hardened from a reputable company.

I've been using the 98 900RR for normal riding as well as track, and have been able to keep up with the latest 1000RR in smaller, twisty tracks. But can never pass due to lack of power in comparison (I'm in B class).

I've also read that the 954 is twitchy and that concerns me a little...

On the road, i'm sure either one won't make much of a difference to me since I don't push it off the track, but on the track, it does.

For those that use either or have used both on track... can you give me some advice on which would be better for track and why?

Thanks
Clauds

I would think the 17" front wheel would be a plus for track use just because you'd have a much greater choice of rubber.

I def thought about that, but since I was already starting to toy with the idea of swithing the 900rr's front to 17", it's a mute point...

I found that mine would twitch coming off a corner hard on the gas if I did not transition to the center of the bike smooth enough. Nothing scary, just and easy side to side twictch on the bars. It can easily be stopped by adding some force to the bars. After a few trackdays like that, I put on a Scott's Damper and it is no longer a problem. Very quick, stable bike now.

Re: Upgrade to 954 from 98 900RR for track and road?

my 954 was never twitchy - and I never needed a damper and I did lots of track days on it in the Intermidiate group 2 of 3 groups (I tend to be upper middle in this sort of group). I too had a 98 rr-w before the 954 and the 954 is a much better bike imo and like Bladeracer says more choice of rubber for the 17". Twitchy can be sorted bya damper but if you pays your money and get the suspension sorted and set up right for you, you may not need one and the handling will be sweet!!
