hello folks....my 929 blade has started to rev up to 4500rpm on startup. It has always started and stayed at 2500rpm or so for a few mins then slowly reached temperature and ticked over at 1200rpm. It hasnt done this in the past even during the ice and snow we have had the last few months. 4500rpm sounds so loud at 5.30 am (when I set out to work). I have checked the obvious cables and checked for air leaks but all seems fine. It doesnt do it every time but maybe 7 out of 10 starts it revs very high....any ideas????
yeah. its fuel injection so the choke is automatic. I wonder if it could be failing somehow...I will have to check at the weekend (unless someone has any info meanwhile)
if you revv it while its warming up..that will happen..i think when its revved the starter valves move to far in and increase the cold start speed...i know if i do it to mine it does the same thing
lol....yeah getting started at 5.30 isnt very sociable. Thanks for the answers everyone....Zerokool...mine starts ok, ticks over at the normal 2500rpm warm up speed for maybe 20-30 seconds then shoots up to 4500-5000rpm without me touching the throttle at all...then settles again about 30 seconds later????
Something must be wrong with the fast idle control. There is a wax pellet that expands and contracts to control air bypassing the throttle plates that must be allowing too much air. Time to check a manual and I think it can be adjusted somewhat. It may need replacing. Strange because usually they don't allow the engine to come to proper hot idle when they are bad. They hang open.
Ya mine idle will only hang if i crack the throttle..it seems to be different that what your describing.. I know there is a warning in the manuel that states not to open the butterflys fully then shut them with out the cables attached..not 100% sure why..but maybe it hits the fast idle was unit and causes it to be out of wack..also you can remove the actual starter valves and clean them..theres a procedre to do so..and you def not want to use carb cleaner b/c of the inner coating..they recommend compressed air for the bores..maybe they are sticking.. but its wierd how your idle jumps back up without actually giving throttle..your sure you didnt damage the coating with in the tbis? around the butterflys? its black and looks just like carbon build up..it goes slightly above and below the butterflys..
I will check the throttle/butterflies tommorrow (saturday)..It hasnt done it the last couple of times that I,ve started it which is typical when you are ready to strip it down and sort it LOL....thanks for the replies ZeroKool
hi did you ever get this sorted on your bike mines does the same never used to start from cold starts as normal after 20 seconds or so goes up to 45000-5000 then after 30 seconds ish drops back to normal
yes mate did see that it was old i have a 929 first of fi ones road it all summer no problems now when you start from cold it starts as normal goes to about 2500rpm as should cos of choke after 20 seconds or so it pops upto 5000rpm stays there for 30 seconds or so then drops back down to 2500 after couple mins goes to normal idel when starting to warm. i donot touch throttle ust key in turn on hit button and leave
Is it spitting out any codes? can you check out the 4 sensors for proper working, MAP , ECT, TPS and IAT as these work with the ECU for a good start up, and have you changed the coolant lately?
hi when you say the codes is this from being read by computer if so no has not been on a computer i will be giveing it a full service in spring ready for summer coolant i can pretty much do any time when i have time as for the 4 sensers i know nothing about these first time this happend tobike was when ileft it for the day for mot then collected it and has done it ever since
It’s a mechanical system, the wax unit levers the starter valves open all the time unless the bike has warmed up, the idle speed adjuster is also connected to this, could be some corrosion on the linkages and rods causing the assembly to hang open.
morning people right this morning i turned on ignition red light on wile you can hear fuel pump then out for a couple of seconds then on permenat when i hit start button bike starts red light out if trying to read a code when does it do it ignition on or with bike running will be removing pannels soon to do engine clean as can see engine is dirty through gaps in pannels. oh other thing is this was fine befor it whent for mot wich the bike was left outside all day in the rain then it started from there
I know the wax unit doesnt throw a code, if you read the whole post I was asking him to check out the sensors first , rather than just move a factory set item , even then I would'nt advise him to alter that, but to replace new inners, I do things methodically and not insist its one thing or the other until every variant has been proved, you swear all you like pal, I'll do things methodically, if you have nothing more to tell the OP that's fine
Bumped this one back to the top @gav001, dont think there's too much wrong with your wax unit ( that an internal clean of it and associated water pipes could help) as it starts on a good idle when warm the wax unit is operating , but maybe because of dirt and gunge within the unit runs erratic at idle when cold, once you have cleaned the inners it should run a lot better ( you can get new parts for the inners on a 929) and a starter valve sync if needed, but dont touch any White painted nuts
ok great thanks for that so far plastics are off and air box cover did notice i disconected the connection to air box as to remove and ust turned ignition on and now does 9 short flashes telling me its disconected will this self wright its self when connected again thanks
Yes it will matey ,least there isnt any others, take it you have the Workshop Manual, for the cleaning of the Wax unit, you can get a lot of gunge through those pipes and depositing in the unit , so its a good opportunity to do a coolant change:wink
