Well my 2000 929 went ka-pop (actually it was just a sudden lack of any noise) as the wiring harness from the alternator to the regulator melted. There isn't much left, but I was able to find where instead of a regular connector between the reg and alt there was burnt electrical tape left by a PO. I'm betting that this connection simply was a poor mechanical match and the heat got to it. Everything else appears to be intact in decent shape.

Any recommendations on how to go with this replacement? Looks like I'll be getting a replacement alternator and regulator, but wasn't sure if there was any suggestions on a particular brand or type to go with, or just the standard replacement part. Thanks in advance.

Have you done the multimeter checks to determine whether the stator or regulator have failed?

The stator connector often melts so it's not a bad idea to cut it out and solder the joints together instead.

I didn't realize that the connector was a problem connection point. With this in mind I went out to the garage and unfortunately the regulator failed (yellow wires had open circuit across them) The alternator did pass the tests fortunately. In good news I believe I can fashion the regulator as an impressive skull bashing device for the PO should I see him again

Ended up replacing the failed regulator and also picked up a used OEM alternator. Bike runs fantastic again and I did find that the PO did not put the bushing back into the stator cover before slapping it back on. I'm sure that cannot be good for alignment. After a trip to the dealership and the $1.46 part it's all in good shape.
