02 954 stator?

Hi, new to the forum and need help!!!
I have an 02 cbr954rr.
Problem: the battery will not hold a charge. I can ride all day come home for lunch go back out to ride and battery will barely crank over. I had the battery checked and is still good. Also i didnt know that your not suppose to jump a bike with a car battery which can mess things up.

I am new to bikes and dont know much about them mechanicly.

Any help is greatly appreciated thank you

Re: 02 954 stator?

You need to make a charge voltage test to confirm that the charging system (alternator and rectifier/regulator) is not supplying the required voltage to the battery (arround 13.5 Volt at e.g. 5000 rpm)

Very likely it is the stator which has failed - that is a common failure on many bikes.
I have no details about the 02 954 but you may find the explanations in this Alternator Tutorial article helpfull.

Cheers ... Fred

Re: 02 954 stator?

Just put a voltmeter on the battery terminals. With ignition and everything off you should see arround 12 Volt. Turn on the engine (including at least low beam headlight) and read the voltage at 5000 rpm. It it should be somewhere between 13.5 Volt and 15.5 Volt on a healthy system.

Re: 02 954 stator?

Sounds like the reg..shouldnt be that high at idle.... regulator IS under the tail..left side of bike if your sitting on it.. you should check your stator too..make sure you battery is in good shape.. connections..voltage etc...

That's excactly how it is supposed to be. Your charging system is good.

The poor ability to cranck the starter motor must hence be due to a fault in the battery - wires - switches/relays - starter motor system.
Check and clean all wire connections in that system. Check the battery voltage during crancking. I guess it should be above say 8 Volts. Check the starter motor voltage during crancking. It should be almost the same as the battery voltage.
