WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

These 'melted' marks weren't there when I bought the bike a month ago. I think the one on top is new from the last few days.

My bars aren't hitting it. I never carry anything up there. I'm stumped and I don't want anymore!

Re: WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

The only thing I've ever read about, is either the magnifying glass effect (sun through your screen at just the right angle) or a really bad short, but both seem unlikely. Had a tiny bit of that on my 954rr as well. Not as noticeable, but thats the only theories I've heard. Lemme know what you come up with

Is it parked in the sun in the middle of the day?

Re: WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

Ahhh...everything I've googled thus far from other forums people are saying double bubbles are causing their clusters to have melt-spots. Even if its not hot out and just sunny, and even if its just for a short time. Doesn't take long for the sun being magnified to melt stuff. Thats what I've found anyway, if you find another cause let me know

Re: WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

but wouldn't that mean every model bike with a double bubble would have this?

nearly looks like a cigarette lighter mark? or two

Re: WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

Everything I've read suggests it doesn't matter what brand, puig, Zero G, Sport tech, that almost all of the double bubs are capable doing this. but conditions have to be just right, and it can happen fast or slow, depending on how magnified the light is, what angle, etc. etc.
Apparently its happened to several different models of bikes as well, there's been 600rr's, gsxr's, and a couple Kawi's I've just read about.
Look in the pic. See how both burn marks are at almost the same angle? I'm no detective, but this seems to be the most logical answer.
I doubt someone would take a cigarette lighter to a gauge cluster...

Sure, if you believe that because one bike won't start one day then all bikes shouldn't start that day ;-)
It's like a drop of dew that starts a bushfire, only one dew drop in billions will start a fire under the perfect conditions.

Re: WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

I unfortuately can vouch for this concept. I set my helmet on the back seat of my bike and walked in to the garage for a few minutes. I was never more than 15 feet from the bike and it only sat there for ten minutes at most and I came back out to see a burn on my seat that looked identical to someone setting a lit cigarette on it for a few moments. Sunlight was the only possible explaination for my incident and it was only 50 degrees(f) out. I also sport a zero grav db but I think the lid was the culprit this time.

Re: WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

Thanks guys. It doesn't bother me as much knowing the sun did it. I was afraid there was a short or someone was strangely vandalizing my bike.

My 02 954RR has the exact same burn marks on the tach. I have a zero Gravit Double bubble as well.

Just make a point to park in shade or do you carry a cloth to put over it?

Re: WTH is doing this to my 954?!?

they actually have a factory recall on the new r1s for the same reason but on the headlights. two of my buddies bikes have done it. the sun hits the projector housing just right, magnifies and intensifies then they end up with holes in the fairing below the headlight.
