2002 954 3rd gear noise? I NEED HELP

I recently started hearing a slight to louder noise/rattle on my 02 954rr in 3rd gear. While in 3rd gear only when the throttle is cracked or closed, but not while throttle is open, OR WILL GO AWAY AS THROTTLE IS APPLIED. I messed my ankle up at work and have had a couple false shifts but not into third. I had heard a little noise, not noticeable. Had the back tire put on and it got much louder. You can pull on the chain and it will move a little under 1/2 inch or less. The indicator on my back wheel adjustment is on the 4th notch, from the back line. stock sprocket and chain, with a 190/50 tire. Is it the gear dogs, shift fork. i NEED HELP

What do you mean by the half-inch of chain movement? Do you mean the chain is far too tight?

Well if I pull on the chain with my hand from the top it will move about an inch of slack, if I play with the slack on the bottom of the chain it wont move down but has twice as much play if I lift upwards............ not sure correct amount or tightness, whats to loose or tight?

Then loosen off the adjusters.

If you are correctly describing the chain tension, then yes, definately too tight.

You don't have a workshop manual for your bike?
40-50mm of slack - measured as described in the manual.

If you search Google or Torrents the manuals are available until you can buy a hard copy.

Re: 2002 954 3rd gear noise? I NEED HELP

Here is a video of what my chain looks like with tention buy hand. A link to a youtube video I uploaded of my bike on stands 1st--> 3rd after I tried to adjust the tention. It's flopping around and making noise!!! BUT I DIDN'T HEAR THE CLANKING NOISE I heard while riding (unless that was it) in 3rd while on stands.

That's a lot more than half an inch of play and looks just fine to me.
The jumping around is also normal when the chain is unloaded.
