929 main fuse..dead on highway

i was ridin to work in the 110 degree az heat and i saw my gauges turnin on and off but the bike ran fine then a minute later..dead no lights gauges click pop or anything. called in and waited for tow truck for a hour in the heat then got home and saw the main fuse was popped,so with the key off i put a new one in and as soon as i hooked up the connector, pop, blew it again, and then again. anyone know where i should start lookin, i looked at the wiring diagram and it shows wired goin from the fuse to the R/R and ignition switch. idk the wut r/r does in the first place so idk where to start. thanks guys. i love the bike but i hate electrical crap. and happy 4th of july

I'm hopeless with electrics but if the fuse is blowing then my _guess_ would be a burnt wire or connector or a live wire is earthing against the frame or engine.
You could try disconnecting evey connector, put a new fuse in and then reconnect things until it blows the fuse again. The fuel pump is probably the highest power draw followed by the headlights so try disconnecting those first. But hopefully somebody a bit more in touch with electricity can give you a better idea of where to start :-)

The Regulator/Rectifier converts the AC output of the alternator into DC voltage and then regulates it down to what is required by the bike (around 13.5-15VDC) and dumps the excess as heat. The bike does not need the alternator or regulator for it to start or run so just disconnect them if you think they're causing the problem.

Re: 929 main fuse..dead on highway

929joe, I'm having a very similar issue with my 2000 929 that I describe in a separate post ("929 went completely dead"). only difference seems to be my main 30amp fuse blows after running the engine for about 30 seconds and not immediately upon turning the ignition switch on. although it's not posted, can you tell me what you found to be the cause on your bike? much appreciated.
