I bought a bike yesterday

About a week ago, I said to my wife that I needed something to chase our son around on. She said okay. Me being the skeptical type didn't do much with it but I started looking around. I was confused with options.

Then one day, I was tired and took a nap. I awoke and said to my wife, "you said I could get a dirt bike...". She muttered something...it was approval. I was satisfied and was going to squeeze the trigger.

I asked for an opinion and was told that a CRF230 would be a great option for me.

I found one on Craigslist with a $2k asking promising to be in tip-top shape and well maintained. The seller was skittish, but agreeable. We met yesterday. I had my mechanic with me and he found a few small items needing tending to. I do wish he'd checked the items that he asked about rather than take the seller's word for it (like air filter and battery condition) so I'd have a better foreknowledge of my cash outlay after purchase.

I showed the seller the NADA value at a little over 1,000 retail and the KBB value at 1790 (excellent) retail. He took my 1st offer at $1,500!

The bike included an aluminum ramp, which I didn't really need, but hey. My mechanic took the bike away to his shop for corrections and a new front tire and we went home.

Was this a square deal?

Oh, and since I've got a trackday coming up, I'm thinking about putting slicks on it so I can run both bikes.

ummmm.... where's the friggin pictures? All I saw was blah..blah...blah... dirtbike...blah blah blah......

Congrats on the purchase though =] I still want a dirtbike (actually a motard) to be a hooligan on... but that is not going to happen any time soon.... Basically a street-legal dirtbike with some street tyres on to just hoon around on... sounds fun to me...

you'll know after owning it for about a year

I almost bought myself a 230F, but scored a 250R (in boxes) for cheap. Ended up rebuilding top & bottom ends (with new) and put on new tires for <$1300 total investment. 230Fs are bringing $1500-$4000 around here (depending on the year) mainly due to the electric start

You'll want bigger brakes and a smaller rear sprocket to put it on asphalt. They top out fairly quick.

Hope it serves you well and give you countless hours of QUALITY Father-Son time

Re: I bought a bike yesterday

That's the current iteration of the XR200 I used to have. I had replaced that with an XR400 after a few years. Looking back, I had a LOT more fun on the 200 than the 400! It was smaller, lighter, and nearly as torquey as the 400, and a TON easier to start. As a result, it's the perfect package for the woods poking I like to do off-road. If I had the same need for speed on single track trails that I do on asphalt, I might have a different POV. You're going to have a blast on that bike!

No worries Jaybird, all can be forgiven with enough pictures =] Looks nice! I still want a dirt bike so terribly bad... one day!

Re: I bought a bike yesterday

I sold this bike a couple weeks ago. Got more than I paid for it! I saw it online less than 24hours with another $450 added to the asking price. Apparently they're appreciating in value. Plus that was a really clean bike and I took good care of it.

I bought a 97 XR100 for Supermoto Racing I also bought a 2001 XR50 for my daughter until she's ready again for the CRF110, which is a MUCH more competitive race class.

Re: I bought a bike yesterday

Itís just a matter of timing. Iím planning to run the XR100 for the remainder of this season then probably get a CRF125 and stay in the stock class. The 150R runs in the F3 Class using Superbike rules, so Iíd need to toss some $$$ at it to make it competitive.
