Wheel Building

I've been searching for awhile for suitable wheels and tires so my children can participate in MiniGP events and it's been a lot of headache not to mention the costs.

My son's CRF50 was a reasonable financial expenditure but the costs for my daughter's CRF110 I do not believe to be reasonable. The tires alone are $200 for the set and the wheels have to be built as I was unable to find a ready-made solution that I could simply buy.

It got me wondering about the tools for building spokes. Has anyone seen such a tool? My understanding is that there's a certain bending that needs to happen to get the spokes to go at the correct angle and then crimped at the hub and threaded at the rim. Would I be able to find such tools and skilled labor at a bicycle shop? What about the hoops? Where can I source them?

Because of time, I'm "stuck" with a 4-digit solution. But if we continue with this for any length of time, I'd like to have a plan for wheel replacement. Ideas?

Re: Wheel Building

You can't really make spokes yourself, but there should be no problem buying the correct spokes for you daughters bike.

To rebuild the wheel you will need a suitable spoke key for adjusting spoke tension and some kind of stand to mount the wheel in - doesn't need to be fancy, you could make something out of wood.

Re: Wheel Building

Thanks for finding that site for me, didn't come up during my searching. I'm looking to equip the bike with asphalt tires in 12"/12" when OEM is 14"/12" knobbies. However, I will reach out to them to see if they can help.
