G’day from Down-Under

Old bloke Alan 55!! got kids (too many) have an unmolested ‘98’ 900RRW except for getting it rego’d for a single seat. Love it!! Just did the Morgan Park Raceway for Australian Super Bikes. Need advice about getting a 17” front wheel, so I have a better choice of tyres, the 16” is ok but getting tyres gets awkward!!

Hi and welcome.

No help from me re tyres, sorry. I specialise in 'modern' Blades!

However, when the right 92 - 99 comes along I could be a starter!

There is a big thread on this, but it can be a bit difficult to wade through.


Assuming you want a wheel that matches the standard spoke style, there is no direct swap but the path of least resistance is probably the 1998-2001 VFR800 front wheel. You will need to either machine 3.5mm from each side of the wheel hub to use standard 900RR discs, or fit the discs from 1999-2008 Honda Blackbird (not the early carburettored version, they won't fit) and you will need some 2mm longer spindle spacers machined.

Hi Alan, @Gunk was right but, took me a day

I've done both RRP and RRX. The 98-99 as @BenelliBlade said is a bit more difficult. I did want to retain the stock spoke look, so I chose the 17" that would do that. The 600F3 front is the right rim but, as stated the F3 and /or your original disks will not work. The NC30 is the same front wheel as well, but needs the same Blackbird rotors.

Ask all the questions you want, I have most of the answers.

Purely for interest's sake (as I don't have one of these bikes) would a whole front fork complete with wheel conversion work from a particular bike? Of course I query potential probs like fork diameter versus existing triple tree dimensions and possible headstock variations.

And yes, it would be an expensive option!

You can fit the entire front end from a 929 or 954 Fireblade onto an RRW/RRX, and it's a very straightforward job, and as a bonus you lose the (IMO) ugly front mudguard/fender. Unfortunately both of those bikes have three spoke wheels, but the front wheel from a VTR1000SP1 can be fitted with a bit of modification of spacers. Getting hold of a good SP1 front wheel for a reasonable price is a different matter.


People have also fitted CBR1000RR front ends, though the forks are a bit short for the 900 blade.


I fitted a 929 front end with the late CBR1000RR multi-spoke wheels to mine, but getting the wheels to fit did involve quite a bit of machining (mainly on the rear end).

Good info, but as said solely for interest. I hadn't considered the wheel 'type' though. Agree that you won't be picking up an SP-1 wheel for a dime!

I've also heard of one owner transplanting aprilia RSV1000 forks (Ohlins and Brembos) onto his 2009 Blade.

To get back on track, I hope Alan has success if he pursues this. For street riding though, I do wonder whether the exercise is worth the effort? Having not ridden a 16 incher (although my former wife got close) I am not exactly qualified to pass comment.

I’ve seen Aprilia Ohlins forks on an early 893 Blade, anything’s possible, it’s not difficult to machine the yokes to accept different forks.
