Thanks Ian great post but im not sure if its worth me doing it anymore i may take it to the garage it seems a big job with loads of things that could go wrong and i have to buy a new stand so not sure Going to put up a new post re repairing swingarm in situ Thanks

Another option is to use jack stands under the foot pegs. You have to be pretty slick in your design to hold the bike up of there are no rafters to hang it from. I was lucky enough to have the rafters at my disposal.

Great info and pics really appreciate that just one question I've been working on bearings for couple of weeks and use a rear stand and a car jack under the bike but it's slightly unstable if I'm going to have to take forks out etc I need a proper stand to go under Engine? Any recommendations? I used to have a garage and when I wanted to lift a bike i threw ratchet straps over the rafters but can't do that now. Tha nks

I did tapered bearings in my first 900 years ago. I remember that the torque spec for tapered’s was a lot less than the standard balls (To answer that part of your question OEM bearing kits are balls, where tapered are longer, stronger, cylindrical “roller” bearings that taper to create much more surface area in contact with the races). I found them to provide less feedback from the front end, which in your case may be a benefit. Just follow the instructions for installation for torque specs.

The entire front end does need to come out, and if you’re doing the top, do the bottom too.

This was my from my 99 900RR, basically not even greased from the factory top set. Grease the F out of them.


And the lower race will need to come off the stem. I cut it with a Dremel, then use a cold chisel to crack it and it comes right off.

Yes matey ,you want to buy the kit, I have had no trouble with All Balls, and if your doing it you will have to change top and bottom along with the seals, Wemoto are very good and with customer care, you will have to get the front of the bike off the ground, wheel and forks out, once you have undone the stem nut the stem will come out, but you will have to buy a drift to knock out the bearings , and then the bearing center off the stem usually with a cold chisel, if you follow the manual you cant go wrong, but have a think about how your going to do it before you start

Thanks that looks a good piece of kit but I was out on my bike today and it was weaving all over the place I think I'm just going to replace them my bike is 18yrs old! Do I still need that tool when replacing? Was on wemoto and there are several different types don't know which to buy? Also when replacing upper do I need to do lower aswell? Heres the options-

Hi matey, Haynes says finger tight , until you put one of the forks in and position it , then torque up the stem nut to 29nm (21 lbf)

I'm trying to adjust my steering head bearings absolute nightmare too many bloody variables My bike was amazing handling wise but noticed loose castle head bearing so thought I'd 'fix' it worst mistake biking wise of my life My bike now handles like an annoyed ex girlfriend one word scary I have tried to fix it four times am I doing it wrong anyone know fool proof way of setting up bearings Have Haynes manual it actually says you should be able to move locknut by hand! Why the f**k is it called a locknut if I can move it by my fingers?
