Installed my $25 VT500 ascot stator and new RR and shazaaaam...she runs like new. Much better than a used 929 stator for $75...lol and they are the same.

I did washed it down with brake kleen and touched up some small chips with 600 degree epoxy first before installation.


As for the new one from Rick's Stators that burnt after 350 miles it looks like when they rewound the stator, they bundled the wires on the backside in a way that prevented them from lying flat when you bolt the stator into the case. When I bolted it in I could tell the wiring was pressing against the case as I tightened up the bolts, I just never realized there was a 'fin' at the contact point....Result....one of the casting fins inside the stator case pressed into the wiring and compramised(sp) the wire's coating, causing a short.Translation...defective rotor out of the box.

If you continually drain and re-charge your battery, you will ruin it. If it becomes sulfated it will not hold a charge at all.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one with a problem with his charging ystem on the 929. Thanks for all the input guys, its been a gig help reading all this stuff. My new stator is just about here and now I see I might need another R/R. Stupid bike. Am i going to need another battery after this? I've been riding just off that and been charging it every night to keep it going. Anyway, thanks guys

More than likely, your original stator was the culprit. When the stator windings fry, it forces the remaining ones to carry more current and push more voltage to your R/R. Over time, it will cause the R/R to go bad. Check your battery output voltage at a couple different RPMs. Once your R/R starts to go, it will manifest itself in places like your speedo circuit, because it's 10 amps (i.e. a weaker fuse link than most of your other 20 amp ones).

Go check out Motorcycle Electrical Parts (ElectroSport Industries) and use the technical support link. There's a nice T/S flowchart there. Although check around for parts before ordering from them. They take forever to ship stuff. But the flowchart is a very handy and accurate T/S tool.

I did indeed toast the new stator...15V/15V/13V ac output at 5k rpm's and 1.8ish Ohms on all three legs...

But...I am 1/2 way done rewinding the OEM stator....plus an used reg/rect and stator on the way.

Tips on installing a stator....just make sure you have a new gasket...and it takes a little wiggling around due to the magnets.


You need to do a continuity check on the reg rect...if you arent sure, just take it in. I checked mine and then took it in to be double checked. They did it for free, it takes 20 seconds to do.

After having futzed around with mine...here is my opinion(no expert)

Check Voltage AC from Stator as well as continuity check if your stator is bad, check the reg rectifier...odds are it is bad also. Again the chicken or the egg..

Now...for some good news those of you looking for alternatives to a new $300 OEM or $150 rewound one.

for $12.00 in 17.5 ga hi temp copper magnet wire and $11 in hi temp epoxy, you can rewind your own. Its actually pretty simple. The GS Souce web page has a link to thier "stator papers". I am 1/2 way through doing mine and except for the blister on my finger from pulling the windings tight...all is well.

More good news..after ALOT of snooping around, it turns out there are ALOT of other makes and models which use the EXACT same stator as the 96-99 900rr and 00-01 929. here is the list I have come up with so far. I advise anyone to double check me before buying one but I got this information from Electrex's and RM Stators sites by cross referencing ...For you e-bay hounds...you will note that a used stator for a virago does not demand as much as one for a 929..same goes for an Ascot stator...anyway...here is my list

Just did a ac voltage check on the new stator. I have over 70 on two legs and zero on the other. It ohmes out with in spec to. The dealer is going to order me a replacement along with the RR. Does anyone now how to check the RR ? I cant find any info on this.

Im having troubles with my 929 charching system also, and the first place I looked was the stator. I pulled the cover and removed the stator and found half of the windings were burnt black and a broken copper wire with all the finish cooked completly off. My voltage readings across my battery with the bike running was 12.46 with a fully charged battery @ 6000rpm. The stator ohmed out at 0.1 across each leg. I know this is with in the spec but since I saw the broken winding I thought it must be the stator. So now I install my new stator and put the bike back together and still have the same voltage off the battery @ 6000rpm 12.46 or so, talk about frustrating. I just placed an order a RR today and it should be here on friday.

Haha...funny you say that...

Before I read this post, my RR came in the mail, and I was excited to get my bike back up...just happened to decide to check the stator before, since people had seen problems with both parts, turns out you were right, it was my stator that was bad (now I'm starting to think my RR was fine)...

Oh well, now I'll have a brand new charging system when my stator comes...any tips on installing that?

For anyone else reading, make sure you check your Reg/Rec AND Stator before you order parts...

Before you ride/run the bike with the new Reg Rectifier....check the stator. You dont want to have to replace the reg/rect AGAIN...

With 3 pin plug from Stator disconnected...start bike and check V ac on all three pins. Neg in #1 Pos in #2...Pos in #3...then Neg #2 Pos #1...Voltage AC should be about 65-75V at 5K rpms. As for continuiuty...take it in...I still dont get it right..LOL

Well, I ordered a RR from Rick's...

I followed some steps to diagnose the problem, and that's what it pointed to(http://cbrworld.net/forums/permalink...ad.aspx#140473)....

From the sound of it, I'm going to install my RR, and going to find out that my stator is toast....how did you check the stator output? Could I do this knowing that my RR is bad?

So, where's the pictures!? I'm having what sounds like the same problem as you. I'll be following the advice of other threads on this site to do the troubleshooting, and I really don't like the sound of replacing the R/R and the stator, seeing as I just bought a new battery (and now I found out that my battery may have been fine )...I've also been having trouble finding info on the Rick's stator and R/R...I've only seen one instance where it failed after 2yrs, so I'm a little leery of going that route...

I ordered my stator from Rick's courtesy of a local shop. It was reccomended over the electrex unit by a mechanic. Dropped it in with no problems whatsoever and bang...she fired right up and runs better than it did for the last 5K miles. The stator was definately TOASTIE! 2/3rds of it was darkened, 1/3rd was burnt..pics to follow.

While I may be a great mechanical guy...electric systems are not my forte and I could NOT have troubleshooted and diagnosed this problem without the invaluable input and experience on this board! my stator search turned up lots of great info.
