Tank69 : Just to be clear, I work with the LAN/WAN end of the IT field, lots of Cisco gear, circuits, etc. *The SW end is taking a beating as well, most of my SQL/DB friends just got laid off back east as their jobs are going to INDIA.

Tanks, sounds like we are doin the same thing cept you are probly doing it much better than me.

Things are getting alot more automated with the efforts to use what you can from the likes of India etc.

I hope I am not feeling too comfortable. Watching openview and Vtam gets boring. When something goes down in the back they DO need someone to reset the box that goes bluescreen, call in a circuit or check for power.

I also remotely admin servers and workstations further cutting down on desktop support jobs needed.

Yeh job market seems tight, but I suppose someone has to keep the circuit up to India.

As voice over IP gets more prevalent kiss your helpdesk goodby!

Technology is good but making us less needed.... You know I still wont use the self checkout at home depot. I like to be rung up by a living breathing person.

Re: How bad is the job market?

Thanks guys for the congrats, I work for a software company and my group is focused on third party Microsoft solutions. I'm a presales systems consultant, I give product demos, speak at trade shows and the like. We just hired a new SC and it took us literally 6 months to find someone qualified. The problem is that their are allot of technical people that aren't good sales people, you need a mix of both to be an SC. If you have a technical expertise in a particular area, sales skills to match, and are a good public speaker than technical presales is a great field. We are generally higher paid than IT folks and if you make quota the commission checks can be great too, also I have a flexible schedule and work from home most of the time. Plus the perks of being treated like a sales person, we have a presidents club which is an all expense paid vacation each year if you make quota and we have a sales kickoff each year, last year it was 4 days in Vegas.

Things are dead in Cleveland....totally. I have a search agent set up for general IT jobs that returns searches from NE Ohio, the Raleigh/Durham area in NC and all of VA. Every day I get 4-7 new postings, most of them being in VA. I'll get maybe 2-3/wk from NE Ohio area.

Thanks to everyone that responded, I was curious to know from real life people what is going on. You read stuff everyday, but it's better coming from real people. Congrats Bladerider, and to those who are out of work, may you find work fast, good luck.

Re: How bad is the job market?

One of my many jobs now (due to downsizing) is warehouse manager. I can tell you that as far as warehouse positions are concerned things are very slow. I have temp. companies that call on me weekly wanting to know if we are ready to put more people back to work. Unfortunately the answer has been no for quite sometime now, they usually share that things are slow all over (Atl).

We will start the month off running and end that same month wondering if the phones are still working. I should tell you that we are a industrial supplier for several large companies. We are a distributor for Gates, Eaton/Dana, Scandura, Legg and various other vendors of industrial hose, hydraulics, sheet rubber & conveyor belting. If we are slow it usually means that the companies that we supply are, in turn, slow

Re: How bad is the job market?

We need programmers badly. 4 or 6 year contract guaranteed. No experience necessary.

The Client Dept where I am working is still profitable and so they are hiring consultants. I get to interview these guys and they are technically highly qualified. There going rate is $75.00/hr which I am told is great in today market. Some companies are offering $30.00 an hour.

No raise for me this year too

Anyway, enough of depressing talks. This thread is making me even more depressed. Someone, please give me some good news.
Atleast, I have the riding to look up to .

Re: How bad is the job market?

HA....everyone that sits around me right now works for CSC. We had a big IT outsourcing to CSC at the beginning of this year for all of our sysadmin type stuff...

Re: How bad is the job market?

I work for CSC (~90,000 employees worldwide; headquartered in El Segundo, CA). After ~3 years at the same salary (which I felt lucky to be getting in the first place), I got a small raise this year, much to my surprise. A lot of the jobs in my specialty (application packaging/scripting) are indeed being sent offshore, and people have been laid off. I consider myself lucky to still be employed.

This past week, I got news that I would be transitioned to a new group; seems I'll be doing one thing full time, for multiple clients, instead of fifty different things for a single client. It's a shame, because I believe it was that client interaction and range of skills that kept my job secure and non-'offshorable'...but at least it means continued employment.

Just an FYI for anyone that could take advantage of it:
CSC does have a LOT of US defense business, and they always are looking for people with IT skills that have government security clearance, or have had it in the past.

Hang in there, guys...it'll get better. It has to. It really can't get too much worse.

Re: How bad is the job market?

I do software development and things are marginally better. I'm getting more interest in my resume than I was 6 months ago, but nothing that's good enough to leave for. I had two friends layed off last year and both (one advertising, the other sw dev) have new and better jobs.

booth23 : Quote (Heavy-Dee @ Aug. 29 2003, 2:47pm)I think my company is one of the few that are hiring. *The company next door has an almost empty parking lot. *We are hiring a lot of mainframe CICS and COBOL programers. *Also a few client programers. *Raises are going to be crap, just b/c mgmt knows we can't go anywhere else. * I found this out first hand when I recieved a promotion a month ago w/ a crappy raise. *We are hiring a lot of project managers also. *There are people w/ NO techinacal skills that in my opinion are $70,000 *secretaries (sp). *I'm not sure why they are being hired b/c we don't have that much work, and mgmt has been saying for the last two years that we have tons of work coming. *Plus a senior programer could do the Project Manager job much more effectivley (sp).

Somebody give a good reason to go be a cop....please!
How soon do you think it will be before some new mgmt. guy comes for your Swingline?
I'll burn down the building I swear I will.....
