A stator can test good when cold and short when as it heats up and expands. Also, the stator can pass the ohm meter tests but still have shorted windings and low voltage output. You must also measure AC voltage across each of the 3 stator windings, should be about 10VAC with RR connected and 40-90VAC with RR disconnected and will vary with engine rpm.

Hi alex350r

In the end the stator was replaced and job done. I can't remember if the valve cover basket got replaced too?

Re: CBR929 blown Valve/Cam cover gasket replaced still smokes

Sorry to resurect an old thread but my 929 has exactly the same symptoms and i'm wondering what the fix was in the end? My stator tests ok but it looks black so wondering whether to replace anyway. Also can't really tell if my valve cover gasket had blew but I assume it has - where should I be looking to 'push it back in'??

Thanks

Re: CBR929 blown Valve/Cam cover gasket replaced still smokes

Saw a post on another site where the fault was attributed to a faulty stator igniting the crank case gases causing an explosion that was too much for the breather to handle.

No obvious sign that it's burning oil. Levels seem ok. No blue emissions etc. He didn't mention a blocked pipe but when I took the right fairing off before I took it in I noticed a breather pipe with a bad 'kink' in it as if it had been trapped. Wonder if this caused it? I'm loathed to spend a fortune if there is nothing major wrong. Thinking of trading in for a newer Blade next year? Garage said he'd chop it in if it was him. But he was quoting a about a grand for the pistons. I may just have to see how it goes for a while. Might replace the Stator and see what happens.

Haven't heard this trick before.
It's not unusual to find some oil in the airbox from the crankcase breather.
Does it burn oil?
Have him run a compression and leakdown test if he thinks it's bad rings.
Has he confirmed the crankcase breather isn't blocked?

Mine was odd because it was still charging the system but on it's way out. Got my replacement from RM Stator $150 to my door.

They're around US$200 from memory and regularly fail so wouldn't be a completely unnecessary cost even if it doesn't fix the problem. Just keep yours as a spare. Definately test yours first though.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the price of a Stator.

Re: CBR929 blown Valve/Cam cover gasket replaced still smokes

Had the same issue with the puff of smoke and stall. About 1500kms later my stator breathed its last breath. Another member GP_RZ posted that the stator was overheating the oil then the pressure has to go somewhere. I replaced my stator a month ago and have not had this issue reoccur. The other reason for this I could glean was a pinched or blocked breather hose to the crankcase (unfortunately it ended up being the stator problem).

Hope that helps.

Cheers Bladeracer. I'll bear that one in mind. Charging system seems to be OK mind???

Is your charging system okay?
I have a vague memory of somebody linking blown valve cover gaskets with heat from a fried stator.

Re: CBR929 blown Valve/Cam cover gasket replaced still smokes

right I will open up the airbox and start the engine to see if there are pulses or not, I will give the oil residue a clean, there was only a smearing which I guess is to be expected. I will have a look at the idle lumpyness again and check that the idle revs are set correctly
