Air Force Instant Messenger

So my boss comes up today and says I need to sign onto yet another system that the Air Force requires called my.af.mil and it turns out, it's pretty damn cool. Shows all AF wide news as well as local, can search for af members world wide and even has an instant messenger and chat system that integrates with MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo Instant Messenger.

I'm laughing as I'm logging onto this system for the first time thinking it's going to just be a joke of a system and to my surprise, it's very functional, but still, like they really need to give me another reason to be distracted from work. Sure is nice though.

Here's where the paranoia (sp?) kicks in. The system, when logged on from your home computer, imports the info from Yahoo IM (contacts, names, info etc.) whenever both systems are logged on at the same time.

Are they going to make you mount a telescreen on your house next?

It is the New Air Force "work from home" policy. Hmmm, the Air Force tele commuting, imagine that???

Re: Air Force Instant Messenger

It is a cool system. From what I understand once they get it all setup you will be able to access all AF sites/systems from this starting point. You can set it up to have all the links and information you might need so when you are deployed it is all the same as when you are at home station, just log on and it is all there.

I just hope they do get it right and is something that will work to help to the job.

Yeah I noticed that. Even has a server access page. That'll be really handy deployed, being able to access your homebase respective drives.

Re: Air Force Instant Messenger

Although I haven't played with it first hand, I know your Navy has done similar things from their subs and ships. We fondly called it "Notes on Boats". They have integrated e-mail and SameTime (that's instant messaging) that allows ships and subs and others to communicate in realtime and via e-mail from wherever... a sub can surface, exchange e-mail, have an instant messaging conversation with a ship nearby and then dive dive dive, back underwater where the rest of the crew can read their latest e-mails.

Pretty cool... a long way from morse code.
