LED Millennium Falcon scale model

At the request of some other members, I am posting some pictures of an AMT/Ertl 1/72 scale Millennium Falcon model.
Since this is going to be an overhead 'light fixture', I got the more durable (but slightly less detailed) snap-tite model.

It has 50, 5mm LEDs (6 orange, 44 white) and 6, 10mm LEDs (all white).
30 of those 5mm white LEDs compose the engine.
Two gutted 'wall-mart' power adapters power three separate circuits.
Engine LEDs has it's own circuit, 5mm white LEDs have theirs and the orange ones have theirs. Both 5mm circuits are on one adapter.

Internal wiring and soldering.

Underside quarter view. Sorry for graininess; cell phone camera.

Underside cockpit side view. the two LEDs on either side of the entry ramp are two of the 6, 10mm LEDs. Two more are on the exact opposite side.

Front view. The center LEDs are two of the 10mm ones.

Backside/engine view.

I don't have a close up of them but I also cut out the plastic where the five circular engine vents and put pieces of drywall sand paper (they look just like small grilles). You can see from the guts picture that they are right over the two power adapters which allow any heat they produce to cool better.

I will also be hanging up two Action Fleet Micro Machines (similar scale) Bespin Cloud Cars up on the ceiling behind and beside it to simulate it being escorted into Bespin.

As well I also have a 1/72 scale model of Slave 1 which I'm considering hanging on the wall behind all of them to simulate Boba stalking them as well.

Unfortunately I still have not hung it up as I have yet to find an appropriate mount, or come up with any fabrication ideas for one. I need one that will allow me to turn and pitch it at different angles.

If the bike isn't braking properly, you don't start by rebuilding the engine.

You're gonna attack them!? - YouTube
The part where they fight off those TIE fighters and 'Cleveland'2-D2 sticks his gat out the window, fires and says, 'That's how we do things in my hood, bitch', I fell out of my chair. Had I been taking a sip of anything, it would have been all over me. That and the blinged out TIE fighter with 'hydraulics' just had me in stitches.

Re: LED Millennium Falcon scale model

The wal-mart adapters, are they converting the power from 115v to 12v? I have a friend that would like to do the split wing fighter with LED's but run it off a 9v battery.

They are converting voltage but to 5 volts, not 12.
Most all 5mm LEDs will run between 2.0v (yellow, red, green) and 3.3v (white and blue). They are also rated/draw anywhere from 25-30mA.

The lower the voltage (or the closer the voltage is to what the LED is called for), the lower resistance (resistors) you will need and the less heat out put there will be. I could've used a 12v adapter but I would've had to get bigger resistors that would've dissipated more heat; more voltage, more heat.
Unless he's planning on running a whole slew of LEDs, hooking up two (maybe 3, AA or AAA batteries in series) would provide 4.5 volts will do him just fine.

As for the amperage, multiply the number of LEDs you will be using, by their amp rating (i.e. 10 LEDs @ 20mA = 200mA). You will need a power source that is rated for more than 200mA. Otherwise you will wind up torching whatever power supply you use.

You can find all kinds of resistance, voltage and amperage calculators online tha will help you determine what voltage and resistance to run.

You can buy the LEDs by the (whatever amount you need, 10, 20, 100), and pretty much whatever color you need from Amazon. Radio Shack has them in a pinch as well but they are way more expensive. You can also get resistors from both places too.

If neither of you have a multimeter, I would STRONGLY suggest investing in one. They are a godsend.
If he runs into any snags and what not, let me know.

The A-wings are BY FAR my favorite Rebel Alliance fighter. In fact, of my several Action Fleet Micro Machine vehicles, two of them (one green unit, one red unit) are A-wings.

A close second is the TIE interceptor (and I have one of those too!).

Nope. A defender has only a slightly higher maneuverability rating but the A-wing can out-accelerate it. Very few craft in the SW universe is going to keep up with an A-wing.

Now from what I've read, the TIE Avenger has superiority over Rebel Alliance craft.
Still wouldn't give up the A-wing.

Not when the Defender has a tractor beam on it, firing 4 lasers up its arse.
