Re: Fireman Helmet

About 5 years ago at an Fireman's auction in northern VT, I bought a helmet and a jacket form them for 5 bucks. Well, I was messing around on ebay, and I saw the same helmet going for like 70 bucks! Needless to say...I think I am going to have to put mine up! WOWZA!

Sweet...very similar to mine.

Re: Fireman Helmet

Is it fiberglass, plastic or that expensive graphite one? My leather is too pretty and too damn heavy to wear on duty.

Hmmmm, Ya know, I've never paid too much attention to it before. I know it's not the graphite one. If I had to guess I'd say it was the plastic one.

Yeah, I wouldn't wear the leather one on duty either. Too nice to risk damaging.

Some people have been known to actually put them in the oven for that 'seasoned firefighter' look. I melt mine the old fashioned way, I burned it.

Re: Fireman Helmet

Dead give away is if it's scortch inside underneath, it's probably an oven job. But if the visor and mostly the top is melted and it's clean inside, it's legit. They wouldn't let me wear my old one anymore because the soot was 'hazardous'.

Re: Fireman Helmet

Yeeeeah. Well soot IS combustable as well as conductive. I actually prefer my gear to be clean as opposed to downright dirty and grubby. The cleaner it is the easier I can see if there is anything wrong with it.

Re: Fireman Helmet

Baked on soot wouldn't clean off. I tried. That was baked on that one I told you I almost didn't make it out of.

Worn gear is the identification of a firefighter ... you don't want to have bright shiny gear, it means you're green.

Basically, blackened helmet, worn out knees (no freakin comment from the peanut gallery), elbows, forearms, worn off and cracking reflective strips, visor so scratched you can barely see through it ... there's your firefighter.
(the helmet is usually a competition between older, 'seasoned' firefighters)

Fresh turnouts, brand new unscuffed boots, shiny helmet and unscrached visor ... watch that mofo, that's a probie, his tests are yet to come . Just because someone makes it through training doesn't mean they're a firefighter, there's a probation period, usually a year.

No matter how beautiful a woman may be, some man somewhere is sick of her sh!t.
