Over 6 years, where has the time gone?

Ive just realised Ive been on here over 6 years now
Seen quite a few changes too, think the worst time for the site was when the Mods decided to become gestapo but thats passed mainly because it was killing the site.
Ive still to see admin welcome a newcomer or a green member which I find extremely rude as we are handing over our pennies to ghosts.
Loads of new peeps now with good senses of humour and thats nice.
Oh another thing that really bugs me its the insularity of the site though

Whats your views and opinions folks?

Dinosaur =) I've only been around on and off for a few years now, but I've certainly enjoyed the experience. I am glad to see that some of the truly ignorant people of the past have decided to go away. I like all the new people, but agree that the mods need to also be welcoming the new members, especially if they go green.

Wow since you posted I had to check how long I've been here and it just short of 6 years as well, although in the first few years I was't a regular... It still mad how fast it all goes by...

Be ten years for me in a few weeks.
I don't recall the Gestapo incident but maybe they weren't Gestapo-ing anything I was interested in? I do have a fairly narrow focus here, technical, racing, performance and such, and I'm not a Honda fan, but since I took on the Mod role I've had to make some effort to pop into other forums just to see that everybody is playing nice :-)
The moderating does add quite a bit to my time on the forum, but also reduces the time I have to partake in all the threads I'd like to. And although I don't agree with all the rules, I did put up my hand to enforce them.

The Admins are just Admins, they run the site so we can all play on it. They don't necessarily have any interest in motorcycles or social networking, which is fine by me as long as the site keeps operating :-)

I don't do the "welcome" thing in real life so I don't pretend to do it here either. If you want to sit in my company just do it, sit your arse down and make yourself comfortable. The "getting to know each other" will happen on its own. And if we decide we're not each other's "cups of tea", that's fine too.

Spammers are busy again, we've banned over 700 accounts in the past eleven months. And we'll hit 65,000 members very soon. One thing that is blindingly obvious to me at least, before I became a mod we were getting around 22-23 new members per day, many of them obvious spammers. Nowadays we get around 14 per day, but far less of them are spamming us - the spammers are getting the message!!!!

Can you be more specific regarding the insularity? We do get a fair number of people coming through here that don't have Honda's or sportsbikes but I guess they still see something here that attracts them.
Personally, my effort is pretty insular in as much as I rarely use other motorcycle-related forums. But that is mainly because I don't see anything there that makes me want to hang around. I do spend a fair amount of time on other motorcycle-related forums so I do get to see a lot of them. There are _far_ too many forums that don't moderate content effectively, and to me, any forum is only as good as the accuracy of its archives. What matters to me is that somebody can search out the problem they're having and hopefully find accurate information that will help them solve it, even if they never need to actually post anything. It's not just about bouncing ideas off the small number of members that happen to be online at that time, it's also about having access to the information that thousands of previous members put out there for us all to benefit from, before they moved on. I'd hate to see the forum become the "Facebook" of motorcycling, zero content and zero value to anybody. FB is just a one-sided chatroom with an enormous amount of spam flowing through it. No conversation, just meaningless drivel with no regard for the "friends" that you expect to read it. There are some great FB pages, but they're not great because of FB, they're great in spite of FB. I see too many FB pages that have great content that is just swallowed up by the FB virus when it should be properly archived on a webpage or forum that remains in place, growing for all to enjoy.

Re: Over 6 years, where has the time gone?

I might agree with the insularity. But I'm not sure what you mean?

If you're talking about things like how this site bans links from other Honda forums, that drives me absolutely nuttbar bonkers every time I have to disguise an URL. (Thanks Sky91 for TinyURL)

I see I've only been here for 2-1/2 years. By far, the first year was the most fun. There were some regulars who have since left, and taken their colorful contributing piece of personality with them. I miss that.

I agree with you on that. I don't see that this forum has anything to lose, let people link out to other forums. But my guess is it comes back to money in the end. The "we might not lose anything but somebody else might gain something" mentality?

Yep, lots of great members have moved on, and some great ones have joined since. I have a suspicion though that that may just be how motorcycling works for a lot of people, it's just a phase they go through, have a terrific time with, and then move onto something else.

well, in that case, when I change careers I might look at some sort of illegal international spud based shipping enterprise. Although I don't think loopy will let me into the gigolo business!

Well.... Not unless I smuggle her a couple inside the king edwards

C'mon SSB - how about a little sensitivity!
It's LGBT!
Are you forgetting about the rest of the non-hetrosexual community? You'd be discriminating against Bi's and Transgenders with a gay/lesbian sub-forum.
(don't get any ideas: I'm hetro! )

Definitely nothing to do with what you are interested in

I dont care if you go into a showroom to buy an asset, I expect at least a thank you for keeping the owner in money

The rest of the paragraph goes well to show what I mean, it basically refers to bikes. Now although I ride and love bikes if I went for a run with my mates Id be soo pissed off if the only thing they talked about was bloody bikes
If ever an international topical thread is posted its basically ignored or a few more of the intelligent members post. Its definitely peculiar to this site, Im on other sites (bikes) and the expanse of subjects is exhilarating.

No Im talking the lack of general topics on here, just cause we put on helmets dosnt mean we cant think about other things for by bikes.

If a seven year old blind girl landed a 747, saved 500 passengers and avoided hitting a nuclear powerstation thus saving millions from radiation poisoning and death.

Start a thread about it you might get two posts
