Re: Big A$$ Plane!

Can you imagine?
STORY BELOW.

Quote NORFOLK -- One of the military's largest transports was stuck on a runway atop the I-564 overpass for more than 16 hours the other day, unable to turn around at the west end of Chambers Field at the Norfolk Naval Station. The incident, starting about 1 a.m., forced the closing of the field for most of the day to all but helicopter traffic and made for a dramatic sight to hundreds of motorists passing beneath it during the morning rush hour.

'That thing's like a big building sitting there.' said some motorists.

The aircraft's nose was so far over the end of the ramp, the crew was unable to see the runway where it was supposed to turn around. The pilot stopped the aircraft and prevented it from running off the ramp.

They also stated that it was too tight of a turn to turn the aircraft around. The Air Force C-5 Galaxy, largest airplane in the free world, is almost as long as a football field and as high as a six- story building.

At 420 tons with a full load, it uses a system of 28 wheels to
distribute its weight. The aircraft spent most of the day waiting for a specially made tow bar to be trucked to the base from Dover, Del. The tow bar arrived about noon and was used to hook the C-5 to a tractor so
the aircraft could be turned around. The plane was moved off the
runway by 4:30 p.m., No one was hurt, and the plane was not damaged.

Re: Big A$$ Plane!

Those C-5's are HUGE! *You really have to see one parked next to a normal size plane to realize how big they are. *Hard to believe they can fly.

Re: Big A$$ Plane!

You are not kidding. Massive. I waited around for hours after one airshow just to watch them button it up and take off. I could not believe my eyes that the thing actually flew. I thought maybe they brought the thing in parts and assembled it at the airfields for the shows..

You know.. pictures can't do the justice.. but look at this. Those tiny specs of color inside the gapping maw of that thing are people!!

Re: Big A$$ Plane!

Doubt anyone swung over this one. No one got hurt and the airplane was undamaged. Question to me would be why didn't the Navy launch 53 to get the towbar and get that thing out of there earlier. Also, I went to work one day in Spain and there sat a C-141, (smaller C-5) with its nose in the stations flight line fire dept. Seems the aircraft commander didn't want to wait for his qualified line man and decided he was going to ride brakes. Tow bar separated and he couldn't get the aircraft stop. Seems he didn't know enough about aircraft ground operations to turn on the aux pump that runs off the battery to stop the plane. Talk about someone swinging. Flight ops had to be cancelled, in coming flights from the states had to be rerouted to Germany and other countries. Couldn't get the firetrucks out, so NO ONE could land.

But this is a good one. I am sure the Sailors coming to work had a nice surprise and enjoyed seeing an Air Force fu-pa on a Navy base. More embarassing for the aircrew sitting in the club that night than anything else.
