I really don't like this precedent.

Speeding camera in DC paid for itself fast !

Quote:
The District's newest photo-radar camera in Northeast caught 788 speeding drivers in the first 48 hours of enforcement, generating at least $23,640 in fines, police said yesterday.

On one hand, you have to admit that these people don't really learn quickly, with all of the warning letters, etc.

Quote:
Police said they mailed an average of 585 warnings a day to speeding drivers, or more than 20,000 notices during the 30-day warning period that began Feb. 27. The highest speed recorded in that period was 88 mph, Mr. Morison had said.
On the other hand, why hasn't it been destroyed? Graffiti'd? Disconnected? Re-deployed in the mayor's office?

These things have to be vigorously resisted or we'll end up like England.

Re: I really don't like this precedent.

I wonder how many people are looking at this, thinking that I misspelled "president" ??

Re: I really don't like this precedent.

I am a conspiracy theorist as much as the next guy, but this camera was in a 25mph zone. That means it must have been either residential or just a really high traffic area for pedestrians. I don't like big brother either, but I would be willing to bet that if you let your kids out in the front yard that was on this street you would be applauding that machine. As a kid we had people who would basically drag race down our street. My dad finally took matters into his own hands, and dug a trench across the road. The police, while sympathetic weren't too thrilled about his new speed limiting measure. I guarantee you having kids will change your attitude about some things.

I believe this is now called "traffic calming"

I am NOT saying these people should not be ticketed, or that the law shouldn't be enforced, especially as it relates to the safety of residents. I am just not sanguine about the use of a camera-ticket-writer. Look, if 17% of the people in that neighborhood speed, then it seems as if it would pay to have a living, breathing, thinking, (and donut munching.... Hi, Chain !) police officer in attendance. And the conspicuous presence of a patrol car would slow things down, which should be the point, rather than revenue enhancement and our continued march toward enslavement by the Machine...... ( gratuitous conspiracy theory added for your enjoyment.)

The sad thing is, they don't really care about people's well being, it's just another way to generate money!!

88 in a 25? That might deserve a ticket...

I do hate the idea of radar cameras all over the place. I'd definitely be a track-only guy then, otherwise I'd be in big trouble.

Re: I really don't like this precedent.

The article said that the camera is at 600 Florida Ave, NE. I googled the address and it comes up as an athletic field for Gallaudet University. Gallaudet is a university for the deaf. My guess is that besides speeders, there isn't much crime in the area, and that people would be equally indignant about posting a policeman there just to write tickets. It'd be nice though to have a more visible deterrent.

Re: I really don't like this precedent.

CBRVFR, I completely understand your feelings. Personally, I'm all for red light cameras, but radar cams, well, I feel they're less important. I've seen alot more people get killed (and kill) pushing the yellow than I ever have running 10 or 15 over on a straight stretch of roadway.
