Re: What the hell are these things?

Was out riding around for awhile today and came across an expansive field of these weird looking antenna. There must have been ten or so of them, some which looked upside down from this one. A old sign near a lane leading to a large building had a warning on it, United States Air Force Installation, Do Not Enter... but no gate. Needless to say, I'm glad I didn't get shot walking around snapping pictures, lol, but anyway, does anyone know what these suckers are?

Re: What the hell are these things?

It's either a VLF or ELF antenna, hope you didn't get too close, they put out gobs of power , the frequency range they transmit can propogate around the world and and into the ocean to depths of about 50ft, so I bet you can guess what they are used for

repeat after me...

They are used to communicate with s...u...b...m...a...r...i...n...e...s so they do not have to surface.

No #### ... and I hope he's had all the kids he wants. Well, you could look at the bright side, at least you won't have to get a vasectomy .

SSG - yes the subs will go deeper than 50'. At 50' the subs wouldn't have to surface to communicate. Matt?

No matter how beautiful a woman may be, some man somewhere is sick of her sh!t.

Re: What the hell are these things?

Maybe this explains where his monochromatic syndrome came from. Those antenna's might operate in morse code...either on, or off The radiation coming off of them probably altered his thinking patterns

Re: What the hell are these things?

Hey chain looks like you where out in my neighborhood and did not call to see if I wanted to ride. If you took these pics out by Elkhorn then you were by the old military radio towers. I know some people made reference to subs and elf but I belive sac actually used these for some sort of long range back up radio system in case communications where somehow taken out by other than nuclear. They also used these towers in several old comm networks such as weather communication and other secret stuff. BTW next time we get together I'll tell you some more stories about them. You know I am in communications and some of the guys I work with helped erect them.

Anyone remember the movie Crimson Tide, where that cable got jammed and made all kinds of noise?....they float an antenna buoy. I'm not sure if that particular antenna is used for subs, I think there are only a few in the world used for that, and they're all located in some off the wall no-mans-land location. And for the distance it goes underwater, I'd have to re-look it up, it was either 50 or 150ft, can't remember off the top of my head
