Had no idea they cost that much?? These are like bikes, you can pretty much pay whatever you want and get something. My 70-200 2.8 ran about $1600, and was worth every penny. NH, I know you like sigma, but when it comes down to it, Canon L glass is the shiznit.. You pay, but hey, nothings for free.
Bubba, one more thing to consider. Like it has been said, buy for the long run, but here's another angle on that. When you pick up and start using digital, you will find it to be less forgiving than film, and this is where a good lens really pays off. Shooting digital is more like shooting chrome than regular film. It's a lot more sensitive to different lighting conditions. Bad glass makes this even worse. Look in your local classifieds as well if ebay isn't your bag, or check with your local camera store. You can find some good deals on used items. People are switching systems, or going digital and dumping a lot of gear to either raise cash, or just switch brands. It's worth it in the long run..
