Re: time shares

what are the good and bad points of owning one. I remember when I was growing up I used to hear all sorts of bad stuff about them.

I am interested in purchasing one (i think) and want to get advice/opinions on them

Re: time shares

It depends on what it is an ownership of. Is it a condo? A houseboat? Is it in a place where you would vacation yearly? Is it transferrable to other locations?
I only ask because I have a timeshare ownership that has come in very handy at times, but can be annoying. I'd say that the first few years you own it it would be well worth it, but after that you may be sick of it.
I got lucky in that my share falls the third week of December for a condo in Park City that can be skiied to. If I don't use it, I can rent it out for a few bucks.
Seriously weigh all the options before getting into it, as you may very well regret it.
I know my 'answer' sounds wishy-washy, but I'd have to say that overall I'm not thrilled with mine - but I'm not totally disappointed either.

Re: time shares

I have one and it is great for planning a vacation for a week but mine is for a week by Disney. I don't go there much since i used to live there. I exchanged it once for a vacation to Hawaii which was great but Now a days with the internet pricing getting better when i plan a vacation i seldomly work with My Timeshare. I get better deals without it.

When you are thinking about the timeshare make sure you buy one that is a prime location year round because that helps you to be able to exchange your week there for somewhere else.

If you get a bad week somewhere in lets Say the Poconos or Atlantic city it is hard to exchange them for any week somewhere else because of the lack of demand for what you have. To guage ifyou are really into it look into these things
1. The average you usually spend on a room for your vacations
2. The amount of places you would like to travel.
3. The amount of times you plan to Vacation per year or a few year period
4 The cost of the timeshare
5. The exchange company that the timeshare is with (this is what lets you exchange your week at you resort for another week at another resort anywhere in the world. They are also your personal travel agent)
6. Are you the typr of person that likes to pay in advance for something that you may or may not use this year.

Re: time shares

Think about it for a few days before buying it.
I have enjoyed mine - staying at the condo in Park City when skiing every day is nicer than driving home and back every day, even with my home only a 30-45 min drive away. I've also traded for time in other places, but remember that you have to pay the maintenance fees regardless of use, and if you use it there are extra cleaning fees. Get a true list of all the fees and such, as they never tell you about them up front.
If you really think you'll use it every year whether in the keys or elsewhere, it MAY be worth your while.
However, like NavSport said, it is sometimes less expensive to vacation through other means.
In fact, you can usually find a one time rental for the same place on the internet for less.

Re: time shares

The Keys are a great place to be just make sure that the week you get is red or high tourist traffic time it gives you more leverage for exchanges when you want to change the vacation plans. Stay away from Hurricane season.

The Keys are awesome. I don't think I would get easily bored down there. Which Key?

Re: time shares

I got mine in Cabo San Lucas and have mostly been happy with it over the years, as that is a favorite vacation spot of mine. I am able to exchange for time at other locations worldwide, but have not done so yet.

However, I was not pleased when my yearly maintenance bill came in December and had increased by 75%. For the first few years it seemed like a great deal, but at the rates I am paying now I don't feel that it is such a bargain.
