Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

I've got a '74 CB 360 that I'm bringing back from the dead. I bought this bike about 12 years ago and the guy that had it prior had painted the tank/plastic bits burgundy and I'm wondering how to find out what the original scheme was.

I've looked a little, but haven't found much info in the way of vintage Hondas.

Anyone else into the vintage thing?

That's her... I think they came in two schemes in '74, the orange/black and also in a 'glory blue w/ black trim'.

I may start taking the paint down on one of the side panels and see what secrets lie beneath.

This bike still has the dealer sticker on the back fender (Jimmy's Cycle Shop - Martinsville, VA) and was the beater for several years. It got quite a few people past the rider's test at the DMV back in the late 80's and early 90's. She's been sitting in my brother's basement for the past 7-8 years and needs to see the light.

Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

I had a blue 74 CB125 when I was about 8 to around 13. I rode it like a dirtbike, trails through the river etc. Worthy of a Vietnamese post card. I mean I beat the #### out of this bike and it wouldn't die. If I was only smart enough to keep it.

Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

My brother had an SL70 and treated it the same way... he was always trying to catch me on my CR80

Those things would NOT die!

I've been threatening to get the 360 roadworthy for the past year. Now that I've sold the 929 and it seems to rain every weekend, there's no better time than the present.

Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

THAT WAS MY FIRST BIKE!!!! Bought it for 300 bucks from a guy down the street who couldln't get it running. I was riding it around the yard that afternoon! Painted it blue. Rode it around the yard for a year and on the street for two. Just sold it two years ago for $300!!!! How is that for cool?! I definately got my money out of it.

Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

It's blue/black. Found one of the side panels had a chip of the last coat of paint had come off and a metal-flake blue finish was poking through. Now the tricky part... finding 30 year old paint to match.

Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

All you need is to take a sample of that color blue to a professional Automotive paint shop and they should be able to make a batch close to what you need ! Have you tried checking to see if Honda has any original parts for that bike? It may be a long shot but Honda does still carry parts for really old bikes. I suggested that because its pretty expensive to get bike parts painted, it may be worth buying new prepainted parts!

Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

I've started looking into the parts situation and Honda is really on top of their game when it comes to parts for old bikes.

The paint job that was on the bike is really bad... I've managed to peel all of the non-stock burgundy paint off of the side panels and the tank. Looks like I can work off the primer with some really fine grit sandpaper and I may be able to save the original paint. The blue inderneath looks like it's in pretty good shape... I think they painted it just to change the color.

The trick is going to be getting all of the rust out of the tank. I'm going to try the Tank Kreem process unless anyone on the board has had a bad experience with it and talks me out of it.

And so the adventure begins...

Re: Paint Codes for Vintage Honda

John, bit of an old thread here.

The only way you'll probably be able to get Tornado Blue Metalic is probably by getting it colour matched as near as possible.

Is this a old defunct color? Has it been replaced by another color? John
