Digital Camera Thoughts...

I have an old Olympus something or other 3x optical zoom 1.3 mp camera. Its age is starting to show and I want to replace it with something that will allow me to take detailed shots again (damn monitors keep getting bigger )

Im thinking Pentax Optio S, but it seems a bit pricey when compared to the rest of their lineup...and is still using CF memory. One one hand I like its size, and the fact that CF memory is cheap as hell On the other, is 3.2mp too small for buying an all purpose digital camera that I can expect to own for a few years? is CF memory going to go the way of betacassettes anytime soon?

From a totally different perspective, Im thinking Olympus C-50Z (not c5050Z). I have an opportunity to get one for about 25$ more then the S, the difference is its cash vs. free 0% financing for a year or so on the S. On the plus side its a 5.0 mp, and a fairly reasonably priced one at that. I know Olympus quality and I like their equipment, I own a good amount of random stuff made by them and its stood the test of time for me.

It also has Xd memory...which im somewhere in the middle on. Its fast (and soon to be faster Im sure) tiny, and is growing in leaps and bounds. It doesent seem to be too incredibly far from the price of smartmedia and Cf etc...but to get a reasonably sized card for a 5mp camera...talking like another 150$ or so for the card (vs. 100$ for a stacked CF unit).

The other factor is that the camera is a little bit larger...and do I really NEED the extra mP's? its not like im a professional (nor do I expect to be with a mid-level point and shoot style cam) but I would immediately appreciate having the tiny footprint of the Optio'S'. Though again, haven't owned any Pentax (digital) products..not sure if tiny translates to 'will need replacing after the 3rd time I put it in my pocket'.

I have checked the reviews...and the $$$ thing really isnt that big of a deal. In fact im sure both will be cheaper by time Im actually ready to buy (ie: have no $$ now but planning months away with my 'toy' fund). I don't streetride anymore so tankbag-ability isnt that important - but maybe stuffing it in my laptop case as opposed to around my neck may be more incentive to get more use out of it, and thus more value from it(right ).

I just figure someone out there owns one of these guys and has some input, or has gone through something else of this nature recently , so Im asking for your advice

..oh, and I have seen the new stylus' 300/400 from Olympus, size is ok - but still oddly sized for my liking, and not enough MP per $..and the weatherproofing I could care less about. Not to mention a 300 stylus is 370$ 400 is 470$ and the C50 is 425$..all of the above come with 96mb of memory but would require a little more anyways...ahh its good to dream, Id make a good millionaire, for the whole day it lasted

why put off today what you can wake up late and forget to do tomorrow.

Re: Digital Camera Thoughts...

I own neither but have purchased about 10 digital cameras over the last couple of years for personal use and our company. I always go to www.cnet.com where they have great reviews from pros and users, and also a list of where to find the best prices. Check it out if you haven't already.

Re: Digital Camera Thoughts...

That's the exact camera I'm lusting after right now. I love the C-50. On eBay, a refurbished C-50 with a 5 year Mack warranty plus extra memory is going for right around $425. I am also considering the D-40. At 4.0MP, it can be had for $265, or with a shitload of extras like rechargable batteries, more memory, 5 year warranty and such, you can get one for around $300! Not bad for a 4MP camera!

I have lots of debt to pay off this month. I'll probably get something in a month or two.

Good Luck! Let me know if you find any great deals out there. I'll do the same for you if I find something.
