Re: Boat capsized

This is my home town and I used to commercial fish out of this bay and knew this boat well. It was a charter boat and all these people were tourists. Tragic.

Just saw that on the news a little while ago.

If you never try anything new, you'll miss out on many of life's great disappointments.

Re: Boat capsized

*That's tragic. *The article says 10-15 foot swells, seems like allot of chop to be taking out a charter. *

Firedawg, what did you fish for? *I did 2 yrs. of commercial fishing after high school, I fished for tuna off the coast of Gloucester MA.

Crab and shrimp ... sure was nice making 2 g's in 5 days. *sigh*

The Tillamook Bay jetty was notorious for huge swells ... always, it was rarely a pleasure to cross, even at slack tide. It doesn't surprise me that it finally got a boat. 10 years ago was the last one that it claimed ... my ex-captain's brother went down on it. I have a few friends that still work the boats up there, I'm just hoping not on that one.

Ah, so you made a regular check... I just did the long days of laying around waiting to hook a $10k fish. *But it sure was fun hopping in that chair for a 4 hour fight.

I made a percentage. 9% shrimping, 8% crabbing. A full shrimping load (30,000 lbs. was the limit at the time) would bring me about 2500. 2,000 was about the norm because we usually brought in around 20k - 30k. *sigh* Good times ... boring as hell, 5 days on the ocean, waiting every 2 hours between drags, but man was it fun when we pulled in full bags of pink money.

Re: Boat capsized

That's a little close to home. I've got friends that live in Astoria and we've chartered boats several times to go salmon fishing. I was pretty apprehensive watching the news broadcast just waiting for a name I knew.
