Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

I get this twice a year via email. What no one seems to realize is that the following day will be "Twice as many gas-shoppers day".

If we really wanted to stick it to them, we'd start using less and less gas by buying more efficient cars, using public transportation, car-pooling, etc, etc.

Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

Yep.

The better thing to do would be convince everyone to ride bikes or use mass transit to work for one day. Now that would be a heck of an eye opener!

Ironically, next week is bike to work week...

Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

Um...Nope!
Everyone got rid of there storage so not diminishing the end supply will stop them up faster than Keopectate. One more thing. If it's no big deal, how about just not buying gas that day. Just try it once and see what happens.

Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

Nuthin...it's energy. You gotta buy it on the 20th and the oil company knows this. You have to do something different showing you don't have to drive your car.

Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

Not exactly right. Easy enough for almost all of us to lay off the gas for a day or at least consume less for one day. They won't be able to recover that day. But if you are determined to help out the oil companies in every way you can, go ahead, it's a free country.

Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

I haven't put gas in my truck in 2 weeks and it's just under half tank. I ride my bicycle to work and back 17 miles daily. For a gallon of milk or a 6 pack of beer kinda trip to the store, I try to ride my bike or walk the dog.

You have to quit using the gas for it to matter. Using, but not buying, fuel on the 19th doesn't mean a thing.

I think it's a great idea if you can get people to do something that would actually save gas, but this isn't it.

Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

Gas-boycott on snopes.com

Unfortunately - as it is reported - boycotting gas for one day isn't going to do anything, since motorists will continue to drive and thus, will need the same amount of gas. Assuming that this could really be organized and most of the country participated, all the gas-companies would notice is a spike in sales before and after the selected day.

Since we view driving SUVs and other gas-guzzlers (I wanted a truck at one-time ) as a necessity, we're not doing anything to diminish our demand for gas. In fact, we're only increasing it. Once we start finding another source of oil OR we cut our demand for gas, prices will show a significant decrease.

Hey, we want a 6-cylinder sedan to replace my wife's Celica, but we're looking at 4-cylinders for fuel-efficiency.

Yeah...but they don't sell Sierra Nevada or Guinness in 30 packs.

YUP. Demand is increasing, supply isn't, prices rise.. Simple macroeconomics.

How about this great idea. A law should be in place where every SUV, and V8 bought has to have a sensor in the gas tank opening, and every fuel station pump should have a sensor that knows it's a gas guzzler so that they pay a little more for the same gas( luxury taxes) for the big pimpin rides that they wanna sport. I'm sure they have the technology in place, so why not??

It would seem like a good idea at first, but then I suppose you could put a sensor on the guts of over-indulgers and charge them a little extra for driving up the price of White Castles, Krispie Kremes....

Re: DON'T BUY GAS ON MAY 19th!

This little amnesty idea also assumes that everyone buys gas every day. I might not buy gas on the 19th, just because I don't need to. But I guess I can say I helped... Go figure.
