Kudos to ND4!

Just wanted to thank ND4 again for turning me onto the Spybot - Search and Destroy, and Ad-aware programs. They are both free downloads. If you don't have any spyware programs in place, these two are great. I run them daily, and daily they find and remove crap. A great addition to your antivirus software

Re: Kudos to ND4!

Don't forget to get the frequently updated, and free, McAfee Stinger.exe. My experience is that it finds what Norton Anitivirus can't (or doesn't until later).

SpyBot is what I use... however, after I switched to Mozilla Firefox for browsing, my spybot results went from hundreds to almost nil. Bacchus, give FireFox a whirl! (This is one of those, "If you liked spybot, you'll LOVE firefox" ads. )

(hehe, a google bar is included in FireFox so you don't need to install/download anything and there are no ads...)

nomad, are you saying to use FireFox stand alone, or along with the other two programs I am currently running?

FireFox is a web browser which you would use in place of Internet Explorer. It will prevent most of the spyware from getting in in the first place.

FireFox works great but there are a couple of things you will need to keep in mind:

1. Add an websites (like www.fireblades.org or you internet banking site) which ligitablely use pop-ups (the .org uses them for the PM pop-ups) to the list found in the Web Features section of FireFox's options
'Tools' -> 'Options...' -> 'Web Features' (left side of screen) -> 'Block Pop-up Windows' -> 'Add site...' button

2. One annoying thing that FireFox does in comparison to IE is that when using the smilies in the .org posting interface the smilie code is not entered at the point when your cursor is but rather at the bottom of the text area. I haven't found a way to get around this yet but IMHO it is a very small price to pay to maintain control over webpages your visit.

VET is looking for different things than those two programs......but you are right, many many times people have told me that thier computer is stuffed and they want to buy a new one. But you run adware on it and all the nasties are gone and the computer works MUCH better, no longer a need to get a new computer. Not the best sales technique but its a hell of a lot less hassle for them and me.

There is one gotcha with adaware that I've encountered before, alot of 'free' software has spyware built into it so it can collect marketing info which is then sold to pay for the 'free' software. A good example of this type of thing is the free version of Kazaa, a peer to peer file sharing software package, it has at least two major peices of spyware as part of it's install. When you run adaware it will remove that spyware and kazaa will no longer function without it. Kazaa can be re-installed each time you run adaware and remove the spyware but thats just a pain in the arse. (note: if you have paid for Kazaa you probably won't be affected by this)

As an alternative to kazaa I use a program called SoulSeek, it is completely free and has no spyware. In fact if you want you can even get access to the source code becuase it is produced by an Open Source project.

you can get soulseek from here

SharpReader is another free software package I use. It lets me keep track of News Feeds from yahoo, cnet, Reuters, wired mag etc. Unzip (you might need WinZip to do this) SharpReader and run it by double clicking on the sharpreader.exe file then you need to track down the news feeds (RSS feeds, RSS=Real Simple Syndication) you want to subscribe to. This then allows to you get the news the second it is released onto the RSS news feed.

Re: Kudos to ND4!

One other program that I missed, technically its not free but its WORHT ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD and I was happy to pay for it. Plus you can do and indefinite trail period then only down side to it is that you get the programs name and web address printed in the footer of any printouts.

The program I'm talking about is FinePrint, it acts like a middle man for printing, allowing you to print to it see and manipulate how it prints out then you send it to a printer. Some of the things you can do is print 2 or more pages to a single sheet of paper, delete that last useless page when you print a webpage, add watermarks, etc

All the wonderful things it can do
http://www.fineprint.com/products/fi.../benefits.html

To download it click on the download button beside the FinePrint description on this page
http://www.fineprint.com/index.html

I have it set as my default printer but If you don’t want to use it you can change your default printer back to your old printer or if you want to occasionally not use FinePrint then select a different printer when you click ‘File’ -> ‘Print…’ in whatever program you are trying to print from.
