Centrino Users?

Just got a new Dell Centrino notebook. Anyone here have this set-up? What do you think? (Guess I should'a asked before I ordered it)

How do the wireless hotspots work at places like Starbucks? Do you pay, or does the link just work?

How do you carry the notebook to Gaybucks when going there to pose on the bike? Backpack or messenger bag?

Re: Centrino Users?

If I have my bike at Starbucks I'll have no worries...since it's on a trailer.

You don't need to return it, but I'd buy one of these to go with it depending on how much use you want to get out of it: link

(I've had good experience w/Dell desktops - very manageable though the firmware changes are annoying, but their laptops are another story altogether. My inspiron 8100 worked better when it was broken before I sent it back to them then it did when I got it back too...ugh)

Re: Centrino Users?

We just finished installing a huge pay-for-use hot spot at the convention center. The funny thing is that almost all Hotels give it to you for free. And all you have to do here is get close to the hotel which is attached to our facility and "BAM!", you get on for free. I believe that everyone will go free in a matter of about a year or so exept areas that have you boxed in such as a stadium, arena or convention center that has no Hotels near it (and, of course, a ship).

Re: Centrino Users?

The fee for a hotspot depends on where you are...

Uh... but lets back up a sec. Firstly, this is a wireless networking question, not Centrino. But that's just picking peanuts.

Secondly, when you login to a hotspot, it'll prompt you (usually) for a username and password... you might need to register or you might need to pay. It depends on where you are. I was just in Montreal last week and one of our cell phone companies (Telus) has hotspots around the downtown core. You paid $25cad and you could use it wherever... Hilton, Sheraton, the cafe's wherever. Some places do give it out for free (airport, Marriott etc.) so just be a wise spender. *shrug* I had to pay $25 on my company because the Sheraton didn't provide hardline access. :/ But $25/week beats $10/day if you are there all week. Now I'm just rambling.

We're a "Dell company" so it's a moot point, but, the 2 Dell dual processor number crunchers I have have been wonderful machines. My last notebook is a Dell Latitude I've had since 2000. Only bugs were one floppy drive dying, and the battery packs dying after about 2 years. Otherwise, that computer has never once left me stranded on the side of the racetrack or at a customer. And it's had the piss kicked out of it traveling. My home computer is a Pentium II 400mHz Dell my Dad got me as a graduation gift (my first computer). It still works well, just kinda slow.

So for me, Dell has an outstanding record.

Re: Centrino Users?

Yeah, thanks Nomad. I should've clarified. I do know it's just a wireless networking system built into the chipset. Just never had a computer with wireless capability.

Re: Centrino Users?

Just got my machine up for our internal wireless network. I can tell I'm going to like this little computer already.

It's fun, ain't it. Now... if only I had high speed at my cabin I'd be set. Work from the deck in the woods, that's my goal.

I typically don't get involved with PC's unless they are a problem, and since all we VAR for is Dell, I guess that could get me biased some. But like I said their desktops and servers have been pretty damned stable, thus we only have problems with the laptops, as of which about 70% are really layer 8 issues.

Also noticed you had a latitude - that makes a significant difference. My last latitude (a 99 model) worked as a roadgoer for a few years before becoming a dedicated labrat in an optics lab for ~2/3 years. It never died, just the T-22 I had at the time seemed more suited for the task so in it went.

I really can't whine about them too much overall either, I just assumed you bought your own PC and if so - was going to advise exercise of choice. Free laptop = moot point
