Tomorrow is the day!!! Not motorcycles - Tour de France! May be spoilers within.

Tomorrow is the first day of the 2004 Tour de France!

What do you think, can Lance pull it off?! Mavic, Jay, et. al. ?

This one is gonna be a real nail-biter for sure.

Lance has some serious competition this year (as if he hasn't in past years ). But what from I've read, Jan Ullrich is in the best shape of his life, then you have Tyler Hamilton (Lance's former teammate), and others. It's gonna be a crazy, rollercoaster 23 days!

Re: Tomorrow is the day!!! Sorry, not motorcycles...

Of course I am cheering on Lance but I can't say if he is going to pull it off. Iban Mayo gave him a 'pants down spanking' on Ventoux during the Dauphine and Tyler was right on the Iban's heels. Hopefully Lance is right about the Mountain's not being the key to success this year. If he hangs with Jan in the ITT and then keeps Mayo and Hamiliton in check during the mountains, he will win. Of course I will be there live starting July 16th-26th. I'll be sure to post up some pics once we get back. Until then GO LANCE AND KEEP THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN!!!!

Maybe we should hit Conq up for a Cycling sub-forum?

Can you say 6 in a ROW!!!!

Not yet, since I am working but from what I heard, the course was very technical thus the time loss by the less handling skilled rivals Ullrich and Hamilton. They were probably thinking, just keep it on two wheels and get through the next 2 weeks. Lance will take anything he can get and I am on the same track with the tactics. A little bit here and a little there..... If he can mark his strongest competitor the rest of the race, that 17 seconds will win the race. However, we all know that is much easier said than done.

Damn, I'm gone all weekend and I miss the good stuff. Oh well.

Like Lance has said for the past couple weeks, the tour doesn't even start till stage 10 anyway. 17 seconds is nice but I think realistically he isn't even in top shape yet. They kept saying that since the mountains are so late in the tour he is trying to peak 10 days from now when they have that hellish 9 day stretch of mountain stages and the Alp D' Huez time trial? You going to be on Huez for the time trial Mavic? I'm jealous. I rode up that climb in 1996 when Indurain lost it to Bjarne Riis and it was also the 1st time that Ullrich got second place... It's a cool climb but only epic when under race situations. The climb itself is not that tough. Still should make for a great time trial to watch. Hope Lance doesn't screw up the left turn at the top like Pantani and Lemond did. hehehe....

Lance looks to gain 2 minutes today on Iban Mayo! Unfortunately it was due to a nasty crash... We'll see the official time check in a few minutes.

I have heard rumor that the course designers were targeting Lance this year. Placing the mountains later in the race and limiting the overall number of muntain stages. I think they are trying to create a bit more of a sprinters race this year. There are still enough mountains to benifit Lance, but not as much as in past years.

The problem the designers run into is that Lance is such an all around rider that he can attack in more areas than just the steep stuff. I am in complete awe of his skills! Definately cheering for him to win another one.

Re: Tomorrow is the day!!! Not motorcycles - Tour de France! May be spoilers within.

Yeah, they have said that the past 3 years. They take away climbing, Lance trains for time trials and beats them. They add tons of steep climbing, Lance trains for that and beats them. Their idea this year was to take away the time trial early in the race. Usually Lance likes to ride defensively...it's easier. Get the jersey in the first time trial and mountain stage, then ride it out the rest of the race. This year they are making him attack after 2 weeks into the race. More risky and they believe the riders might be more evenly matched later in the race. Some people would have gained fitness, some of them would be equally tired. We'll see but as focused as Lance is just about every year he seems to have the entire tour scripted before they get there. Unless he forgets to eat... hehehe.

OOooo.... almost 4 minute gain on Iban Mayo today. Wow!
