Am I a fruitcake...

...for being attracted to this?

LINK

I'm really considering getting rid of my '01 Silverado since the little woman decided she can't live without her own truck... and just went out and bought a freagin GMC 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 w/leather, the big motor, and all the other bells-n-whistles!

She's five-foot-nothing, a hundred-and-nothing, but she sure gots herself a big ass truck!

Ahem, sorry, got carried away there for a moment. Back to the serious discussion.

Does anyone here drive one of these Outbacks? Is there another car I ought to give consideration to? I'm a pretty big guy, like to have some passenger and cargo carrying room, am used to domestic V-8 power, but wouldn't mind driving something a little more, um, common sense shall we say? Oh yeah, something other than 14 mpg would be nice too.

Chain

P.S. NO, I don't want one of them WRX jobbies. I'm too old for that little roller skate on steriods.

Re: Am I a fruitcake...

We just bought a 2002 model as the family car. It is 2.5l but not turbo. We don't get the turbo outback here. These are boxer 4 engines like a VW bug but water cooled. Only about 150hp so a little tame but it seems to be of excellent build quality. Here in Oz they also do a boxer 6 cyl which develops 180kw (around 240hp). At 250hp I guess you may find the 2.5XT a little underpowered compared to a V8 but they have all sorts of smarts like VCD which monitors vehicle attitude and apportions power accordingly. I would think it would be fun to drive out on the trails but isn't a serious offroader like Landcruisers, Landrovers etc. More of a rally car than a serious bush basher.

Oh yeah not a huge amount of leg room, reasonable cargo space and about 9km/l around town, 11 on the highway for the automatic version.

I'd like to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandpa
not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.

I've loved them since the "Brat" came out, and I am not a fruitcake.

Re: Am I a fruitcake...

Forester with the Turbo might be a little more what you're after if storage and fitment of your person is a concern, though the wagon is slick...I dunno, I'd just feel more justified knowing the vehicle I was driving didn't have a sedan option and I chose the wagon one.

but me...it's not on my list but I'd be seen in it if you dropped it at my door

(no, no Duc. jokes either, I'm trying to reform and actually be helpful SSG again )

Nice post, thank you - very informative. I think the death knell might be the last paragraph, however. I'm a rather "leggy" guy.

Eh, I think the Forester is just a little bit too pedestrian looking for my taste.

Alright, that seals it. I'm taking this to a poll. Be up in a few minutes.

Chain

PS- Helpful SSG, nice to have you back.

Re: Am I a fruitcake...

You were already a fruitcake before you even asked this question, so what's your point?

You just can't help yourself, can you? Like I didn't think that was coming.

You know Chain. ND4SPD's not exactly a big dude. I bet you could get him into a mailbox WITH Baccus.

Re: Am I a fruitcake...

I like Subaru a lot, and will consider one for my next vehicle. They hold their resale value very well, and the 250 HP outback would be a pretty good option for a big guy instead of the 227 HP Impreza wrx.

(It would be a practical choice, but my heart says MINI.)

People regularly put 200,000 miles on these cars, and hardly ever drive anything else after they join the cult---er, club.

So take a test drive and see if you can fit in with your freakishly long legs. You can ask about aftermarket exhaust systems while you're there.

I'm not touching the fruitcake issue, you're too well armed.

I don't know what's making me laugh harder, the thought of driving a MINI (they're cool and all, but I'm a little B I G for one doncha think?!) or the exhaust comment! Too funny!

I prefer them to be a little younger than the Grand Canyon, but thanks anyway.
