Mac lovers

Ordered 2 laptops last week. Toshiba for me, G4 mac for the guy next to me.

Toshiba works great

Mac burned up within the first 10 min. Failed hard drive and the case was so hot I could barely touch it

To quote the guy: "Mac has never seen anyone switch back so fast" as he was sending it back and ordered his Toshiba

Re: Mac lovers

Hey 'Puter Geek, what's your opinion on Dell laptops??

My plant 'puter type guy just bought me a Dell and I was just wondering. Obviously you think Toshiba are a better price vs. quality cause you bought one, but how do you rank Dell??

Re: Mac lovers

Dell is garbage for a work machine.

Seriously, if I were to buy an industrial strength laptop, it'd be an IBM. I strap mine to my 929 and ride it all over to clients... it has been abused beyond belief and never a problem. Dell laptops will lose plastic covers at the slightest shock and toshiba or Compaq are still more fragile. Buy an IBM laptop.

As for desktops... well... that's another story.

Re: Mac lovers

And Dell's customer support has gone from OK to crap in the last couple of years, and that's a big thing for me I gotta have good service.

It seems that there shipping times have really fallen off too. There was a time when it would take 5 days from order to delivery for a PC or laptop to get to me, but when I finally stopped doing business with them it was around 2 weeks on average.

I never had real problems with the hardware though I'll give them that (desktops, servers, and laptops) and my users are especially hard on the laptops. I think in 5 years I had like 1 bad power supply (PC), 1 bad CDRW (PC), 2 bad tape dives (servers), and one bad LCD panel (laptop). Not too bad considering all the stuff we bought from them.

For the last year and a half we've been buying Compaq desktops and server, and IBM laptops from CDW, IBM laptops arn't exactly low comapred to others but they are well put together, best damn laptop keyboards in the world too. Plus we get very good customer service from CDW.

I'm not even supposed to be here. I'm just "Crewman Number Six." I'm expendable! I'm the guy in the episode who dies to prove how serious the situation is! I've gotta get outta here!

Re: Mac lovers

hmm. I've never heard anyone call a dell a quality product.
I've been through 4 motherboards on my dell laptop in 3 years. 2 hdds. 1 stick of ram.

My sparc laptop has had absolutely no issues for 9 years.

My g3 ibook had a bad logic board, but it only took apple 3 days to fix and they even threw in 10.3 discs (which I didn't have).
my powerbook (work) has been rock solid.

my only beef with the macs are no serial ports

Re: Mac lovers

Id rather have a 3 year old IBM laptop then a Dell out of the box.

dell - ok but I won't be relying on one for my livelihood (again) anytime soon. I use the crap for my job and it has some mileage on it but travels only in cars or nicely padded bags, and still has issues..even MORE after dealing with their repair depot... Their servers OTOH are pretty cool, getting there..

ibm - laptops are kickass, some weird feature/option packs and less glitz on the more 'biz' models with the higher dollar - but even on it's worst day it's still reliable and tough as hell and won't leave you high and dry.

Toshiba - seems like decent stuff but they seem to stick lots of weird junk on their machines and I deplore the OE software toys. Tosh is the only one that ranks worse then Dell in that I have to spend my first 3-4 hours with the machine either removing software or reloading the machine completely (I typically do this with any machine, just cause..but at least the IBM's get a few days of testing beforehand).

Sun/Mac/etc. - pretty solid stuff IME, but zero use for it.

Re: Mac lovers

oh yeah - since Nd4 was touting the Tosh's battle readiness: yes, I have a 386 Toshiba I use in a testing lab at work and although the monochrome screen gets wonky after staring at it for a few hours - it's worked since like 1993 or so since they got it

Sounds like there could be a bad one in the bunch...I'm sure the same for your precious Toshiba. How much are they paying you anyway?

Was it white or silver? It sounds like a PowerBook. They can get super hot with the metal case on it.

Re: Mac lovers

My girl has a powerbook (g4) 15 inch - FARK the cas egets HOT. You can't rest it on your lap without a pillow or something. Oh, and it's also fragile, wont boot up after only one fall form the coffee table. My toshiba PII has fallen off the same coffee table at least 5 times, and only one or two keys are not working properly..

Z...

You're f%#&king up my Chi...
