Why not treat the symptom?

Not the disease?

I've got Google Toolbar and the pop-up blocker stops most, but not all, pop ups. Besides, isn't that like treating the symptom and not the disease (the spyware crap that causes the pop-ups to begin with)?

I've just run Spy Sweeper and nixed alot of crap from my machine, but every time I run Ad-aware I find more junk. When I try to quarantine it all, it goes about 3/4's the way, then hangs.

What the heck should I do here?

Re: Why not treat the symptom?

The Google Toolbar blocks pop-ups on web sites. That's totally different than spyware/adware pop-ups.

Treat the disease. Clean up your system with adaware, spybot, mcafee stinger and any other virus/spyware programs you can find.

THEN... ditch IE, ditch Outlook, apply a personal firewall and start using Firefox.

Your remaining issues are at an OS level which requires another layer of understanding... Linux isn't ready for you yet (and vice versa) but it will be in the next few years.

Spybot, adaware, spydoctor here with pretty good results. If one hangs on you try a reboot and reinstall it

I use IE and outlook and my pc is on 24/7. Just get a little rtr and hide that thing behind some NAT. It helped me since I get almost 0 popups. Except when the parents go on aol and do whatever it is they do to make my life harder

edit: when all else fails.. go riding and forget the pc or just stop surfing porn sites

Re: Why not treat the symptom?

Especially with the newer versions of Outlook (dunno about Outlook Express), it's not bad at all. (Unless you purposely open an attachment that you know you shouldn't. Like a .PIF, .EXE, etc.) I've never had any issues at all.

Re: Why not treat the symptom?

My action plan then:

I'm unable to get Adaware to run for me. So I'm scanning with Spy Sweeper which, I think, is nailing alot of the stuff (not all though - still getting some pop-ups). I'm gonna DL and try Spydoctor too and I'm DL'ing Stinger as we speak. Then I'm going to start using Firefox even though the little woman uses MSN for her mail and browsing. But I can only control what I can control.

As for personal firewalls, I used to run Zone Alarm but found it to be a memory hog and it continually gave what I was told were false positives.

Input?

Re: Why not treat the symptom?

Get a hardware firewall/router. They're cheap, and they don't use any of your system resources.

Re: Why not treat the symptom?

Also, Trend Micro's PC-cillin got excellent reviews. It has virus/script protection, firewall, and SPAM protection. I'm trying it out now and it seems pretty good. Decent price too, at $49 for the whole package.

Example:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....4&type=product

That one has a 4 port hub built in for sharing the connection with other computers. The single-port version of the same router is cheaper.

"NAT technology acts as a built-in firewall"

Uh, so that's like, better than Zone Alarm?

Only sixty bones?

I'm getting one today.

Used to run zone alarm myself.

The hardware rtr shows the world one set of ip's while you pc uses another set to keep it kind of hidden (in a simple explanation)
