looking to buy an lcd monitor and have questions ???

I'm looking to buy an lcd screen for my pc and have been looking for reviews, but can't find the info I'm looking for so I figured I'd ask here. I'm looking to buy online, so seeing the screen (contrast, resolution, brightness) is out of the question.

I've seen a lot of lcd screens that are too dark. For example Brightness: 180 cd/m2 is pretty dark right? Brightness: 600 cd/m2 would be better? What is a good "cut-off" mark? 400? 250? What is the m2?

Contrast. 600:1 is better than 250:1 correct?

Thanks for the reply ND, I'll keep that brand in mind.

Does anyone have any info on the questions I had?

Also pixel pitch. What is it and how does it affect the screen?

Re: looking to buy an lcd monitor and have questions ???

To somewhat answer a few of your questions:
Yes, the higher the contrast ratio the better.
The higher the brightness level the better, usually. What specifically does cd/m2 mean? I forget. A basic way to think of it is similar to lumens - 450 lumens is brighter than 250 lumens, but may be too bright for you. Panels in the 250-300 range aren't dark at all.
Pixel pitch is similar to dot pitch of CRT monitors. A simple explaination would be how far the pixels are spaced. The smaller the number, the better.
That said, I have both a Samsung SyncMaster 240T and a ViewSonic VP230mb. The Viewsonic has a higher contrast ratio, they have similar brightness and pixel pitch numbers.
I like the Samsung far better. I feel it has a better image, although the contrast ratio is smaller at 450:1 and the ViewSonic at 500:1.

If you stick to a panel with at least 450:1 contrast resolution, a 250 brightness and a pixel pitch of .28, you'll be happy. You can spend more for better specs, but you may never notice them.

VERY happy with my new 19" ViewSonic, purchased just a few weeks ago at BestBuy for $550.00 after rebate. It's got a beautifully clear screen with vibrant colors and great contrast.

Hmmm it's a toss-up. This Samsung 910T 19 incher looks pretty nice too.
800:1 contrast ratio ... good? http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...001-160&DEPA=1
Edit: apparently the contrast ratio is 800:1 according to the reviews I've been looking at. Just correcting my mistake.

Re: looking to buy an lcd monitor and have questions ???

I just looked the specs of the two on the ViewSonic and Samsung websites, and it is a toss up. The one thing that stood out to me about the ViewSonic on NewEgg's site is that it stated the warranty was one year. That struck me as odd because I have always known ViewSonic to be a three year company, and according to their site it is three years.
The Q190mb is ViewSonic's "value" line, which may or may not mean anything.
According to the Samsung website, the 910T has a contrast ratio of 1000:1. Perty derned good. It also has a slightly higher brightness rating, which honestly probably can't be readily noticed.
Is the Samsung worth ~$50 more? That's the question to ask yourself. I would probably go for the Samsung for only $50 difference, more than that and it may not be worth it, so if you can find a better deal on the ViewSonic it would be a good pick up.
Like I said, I have one of each of these brands. I like them both, but think the picture quality is better on the Samsung (although the ViewSonic is very good also). That's just my opinion, though, and someone else may feel differently looking at them side by side.

Well, funds were a little low, so I never bought the Samsung. I ended up springing for a 19" widescreen tv from dell for my birthday/christmas present to myself. It is currently en route.

excellent choice! i've been having a similar dilemna, could decide whether i wanted a nice widescreen lcd monitor, or a lcd tv...but figured 1280x768 would be plenty for what little use my desktop system gets....

the only reason i'm waiting is i've heard after the new year, lcd prices are supposed to drop significantly (courtesy WSJ)...which is an inconvenience i'm willing to accept

make sure to give us a review of the tv after you use it for a week!

Re: looking to buy an lcd monitor and have questions ???

Yeah I noticed the 17 incher didn't do too good on the ratings but I couldn't find any for the 19 incher. I'm hoping it does better than the 17. Whatever the case may be, I'll judge for myself. I have 20 days to return it for a full refund.

Dell did piss me off however. I just called them today since their website tracking said I should have received it between the 8th and the 10th. Nope. They lost it somewhere between the plant and the UPS regional center. They have to build me another one which will take another "3-5 business days". The only plus is that they are overnighting it. I hardly see that as a plus though. Knock a hudred bucks off. That would be a plus ... just a little perterbed right about now.
