Any Snake Experts...

...in the house.

Two weeks ago I found a rather large snake skin next to the garage, now I find this on the front walk this morning. Can anyone identify this booger? I've looked at a couple of sites that list snakes indigenous to Georgia but have had no luck. I don't think it is poisonous (based on the shape of its head) but I would like to know before I release it further out in the woods.

Every precaution was taken to insure this snakes well being, it is in temporary captivity for identification purposes only.

Re: Any Snake Experts...

The troll is here! Looks like a juvenile rat snake of some type. The young often look very much different than the adults, and Georgia probably has several of the subspecies.

I'ma workin' on it!

Re: Any Snake Experts...

OK, it the one I first suspected: a juvenile ('04 model ) Black Rat Snake. It is found over much of the eastern U.S., and the longest recorded length is 101" - that's right sports fans, 8' 5"! Other U.S. snakes that can reach that length are the Sonoran Gopher Snake (as in the species in the pic in my "Eyes bigger than his stomach" thread), and the Indigo Snake of Florida.

Glad you let him go cbr99xx - he will repay you by eating many rats and mice.

Re: Any Snake Experts...

I'm mainly familiar with Aussie snakes, but remember seeing one of those at an exhibition a few years back, and as Bacchus said, rat snake is the one. Good on you for letting it go they really doa good job of keeping down the rodent population

Re: Any Snake Experts...

Thanks for the help Bacchus . I suspected my trouble with identification was because the snake was very young.
