The future of Wonderbread & Twinkies?

An American institution comes crashing down....

Interstate Bakeries Files for Bankruptcy
Wednesday September 22, 6:47 am ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Interstate Bakeries Corp. (NYSE:IBC - News) on Wednesday filed for bankruptcy after struggling with more than $1.3 billion in debt and weak demand for bread products, brought on by the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets.
The largest U.S. wholesale bakery and maker of Wonderbread also accepted the resignation of James Elsesser as chairman and chief executive, according to the Chapter 11 filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Missouri in Kansas City.

The company has named Leo Benatar as non-executive chairman and Antonio Alvarez as chief executive, according to court papers. Alvarez is managing director of the turnaround firm Alvarez & Marsal to assist the company in the restructuring process.

Re: The future of Wonderbread & Twinkies?

CBRVFR mentioned this a few weeks back. You just don't think the repercussions of a fad could have this big of an impact on an entire industry. When low fat diets were all the rage, the dairy industry kept right on rolling because they are fully subsidized via price protection and a huge brainwash bank account. There is still a mindset in this country that you'll never grow up and be "big and strong" unless you drink milk, so it's standard required fair at public schools.

"Low Fat" kicked IBC's ass pretty severely when it came out as well. I was still with the company at that time, luckily I missed this latest "Low Carb" thing..... Something about building tons of equipment, perfecting processes, and then mothballing it all when the fad dies....left me a bit jaded on these things.

FWIW, IBC's problems go waaaay deeper than low carb, but when the lawyers begin spinning these press releases for Wall Street they grab for the red meat.....

Edit:
Interesting point about the dairy thing....
On a related note, how long do you think it will be before they adjust the "Food Pyramid" to reflect the current knowledge of the day?

I'm just not certain what "the current knowledge of the day" really is, as they are just now beginning to see the damage the "low carb" thing is causing in the longer term.

I say let em eat cake!

The low carb thing is good for short term but it kicked my ass over a few months. Without the carbs I was always tired and just felt lousy. I like my pasta and bread way to much

They are reviewing/changing it right now:

USDA Food Guide Pyramid Update

I'm not interested enough to read through it for changes to carb/protein amounts, but I know it will now include recommendations for different "energy levels".

My wife will be concerned about this IBC news...she didn't get the nickname "Whitebread" for nothing. BTW, she has a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics.

Are Ho-Ho's safe? That's what I'm worried about.

That was one of the funniest scenes in movie history IHMO (relative to uniformed cops anyway).

No sweat on the Twinkie factory going tits up. I like Little Debbie Golden Cremes better anyway.

gummi cuffs, I'm trying not to laugh at work, I honestly am. Everytime I read of you guys post that, I almost start crying it's so funny.

There is a huge Dolly Madison factory/bakery near here. The air smells yummy when you drive by.

I do all my own stunts.

Got you beat!! I have a Dolly Madison clearance store around the corner from me. Where else can you get a full days calories or 10 items for less than $4?
