Stupid question about # of gears

This popped in my head. Why do high performance machines only go to a sixth gear? why isnt there a seventh or up? I know the new 1000 Hp caddy has a 7 speed gear box but why not anything else?

Re: Stupid question about # of gears

My guess is cost/size/weight and practicality.

Re: Stupid question about # of gears

...add maintenance, gear ratios too tight (you'd be shifting every 2 seconds), transmission complexity.

To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

you need a lot of power to make that many gears worth it. hence the 1000hp caddy having 7, I think there's a BMW or Merc that has 7th also.
and all of my bikes and my friends say their bikes have 7th also

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: Stupid question about # of gears

..and if you look at CVT transmissions, they are infinitely variable between their limits. In automatic, they adjust the ratio to ensure the engine runs at max efficiency. They often have settings to equate to say six or seven "gear ratios" for using the transmission as a manual shift. One of the most efficient kinds of transmission, but still torque and power limited so they appear in Europe on cars with engines of less than 2000cc.

Not heard of one with a bike, though.
