Hard drive question...

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this already, but I'm wondering if any of you fellow geeks might know any tricks. I got a hard drive that started the dreaded clicking, is there any way to recover the data off of it? Can the manufacturer recover data if there's no other way?

This thing had all my pictures I've taken with my digi cam, along with a ton of other stuff. Don't care about much, except the pictures. Had them burnt to CD as well, but the CD is AWOL

Someone please tell me there's hope...

Re: Hard drive question...

I have never used them but there are disk recovery services that probably could help. However I do not think they are cheap. The only other thing I could think is put it in the sun it might thin the lube and help (this is unscientific though) DO NOT apply heat, only slightly warmed in the sun would I call safe. Good luck

Re: Hard drive question...

It costs big bucks to recover data.

Re: Hard drive question...

The sun, huh? I had someone recommend putting it in the freezer for a few hours claiming it will come back one more time. Needless to say that didn't work

Know any place I can get quotes? I have data recovery software within access, but at this point the BIOS doesn't even recognize the drive so the software won't do any good.

It is a educated guess. If the oil in any bearing is gummed up it might help, although it will not hurt. The only other thing I have seen is not something I recommend except as a last resort before trash can time, give it a on the top, while powered up. If this fails give it a radial be aware that either of these could cause unrepairable damage so use only before trash time.

I don't think I wanna use the BFH method I found a couple companies online that do data recovery and sent them e-mails asking for rough estimates. Some things you just can't put a price on, I think this may be one of those things

I'd expect it to be in the 1000's.

Re: Hard drive question...

I'd agree with Conq. A girl I work with had to get a recovery company to get data off a drive that was dead and I want to say it was in the low thousands. I'll see if I can find out tomorrow

Re: Hard drive question...

I had a drive seize on me. There is a local disaster recovery place that was able to get all my data back without having to pull the platters, and it was ~$300-$400. I don't recall exactly but it was in that neighborhood. Had they pulled the platters to put into another drive they told me it would have been another ~$200-300.
It is pricey, but not all that bad if the data is absolutely necessary.
I now back up all important stuff to CD at least weekly.

Re: Hard drive question...

The freezer trick worked for me about 2 months ago, was able to get about 2/3 of the files off the drive before it warmed up again.
(really)

Really sorry to hear this ND4. But, didn't you ever think of multiple backups?! Good luck, and I refuse to be the one to smack your peepee... Probably couldn't hit something that small anyway.
